
For Lycoming College’s 2022 fall semester, the first-year seminar, “Are Women Funny?,” was offered to incoming first-year students. Created and taught by Shanin Dougherty, associate director of career and professional development, the course provided students with an overview of comedy created and performed by women through text and visual media as well as why the idea of funny women continues to be a polarizing topic.

When deciding where to pursue a bachelor’s degree, Williamsport native John Confair ’23 didn’t have to travel far from home to find his best-fit at Lycoming College. But after winning a Wertz scholarship for high achieving students, he travelled across the ocean to spend a semester studying abroad in Barcelona, Spain.

At Lycoming College, students are afforded a number of opportunities to expand the boundaries of their education with global travel. For the summer of 2022 and for the upcoming fall semester, a total of 14 students were awarded with study abroad scholarships, three of whom won nationally competitive scholarships, including Becky Wisdom ’24, Molly Jenkins ’23, and Dominick Philip ’24. All were made possible through the Center for Enhanced Academic Experiences’ Office of Global Education.

Things look differently today than they did one year ago. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the world halted, and with it, opportunities such as internships fell through for many college students, one of them being Alexander Laubscher ’22. A helping hand from Anne Landon, career advisor with the Center for Enhanced Academic Experiences (CEAE), as well as a local alumnus, enabled the corporate communication major and graphic design minor to secure the experience he needed to build his resume.

In a season when so many future plans have been put on hold, young graduates from Lycoming College continued moving forward, thanks to the connections made possible through the College’s Center for Enhanced Academic Experiences (CEAE). Although the COVID-19 pandemic delayed fulltime job offers for many young grads, in the summer of 2020, now-alumna Mackaella Goodwin began a fulltime position at New York Life Insurance Company following a successful corporate internship with the same company.

As part of a newly-developed institutional partnership, three Lycoming students began their summers with an internship at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Katie de Melo ’19 (Tiverton, R.I.), Jazmin Jones ’20 (Gloversville, N.Y.), and Xiyue Yang ’20 (Beijing) each lived in Washington, D.C., and interned in various Smithsonian offices and museums from May 14-June 8.

Five Lycoming College students are preparing for new adventures to study abroad with opportunities secured through the College’s Center for Enhanced Academic Experiences (CEAE). The students will all participate in semester-long programs that will enable them to take classes abroad and receive credits that will count toward their degrees, while fully immersing themselves in a new culture, both academically and professionally.
