Lycoming College is responding to market demands with the introduction of a new academic program in data science for Fall 2025. In response to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics metric stating that the employment of data scientists is projected to grow 36 percent from 2023 to 2033 — much faster than the average for all occupations — data science at Lycoming positions students to work as data scientists, data analysts, data engineers, business analysts, market researchers, and database administrators.
Combining the principles of the fields of data science, computer science, and math, data science is an interdisciplinary major that teaches students how to turn raw data into meaningful and actionable insight. Available at Lycoming as either a major or a minor, data science students use calculus, algebra, statistics, and mathematics, as well as computer programming languages and statistical software, to manage, model, and analyze data, and to interpret and apply their findings to a wide range of problems.
Building on its liberal arts and sciences roots, the new data science program provides interested students with academic flexibility. Lycoming students can easily combine a major or a minor in data science with other courses of study, such as business, finance, economics, political science, sociology, criminology, physics, and even art and music, to tailor the focus of their studies and follow their interests.
“All organizations are generating tremendous quantities of data… but those data aren’t useful until they have been analyzed and understood in context” said Mica Kurtz, Ph.D., associate professor of economics and co-director of the data science program. “This program aims to equip students with the ability to make sense of data and communicate those findings into actionable insights that can be used to solve real-world problems.”
