Full-time Public Safety Officer

Lycoming College seeks applications for a 12-month full-time, benefit-eligible public safety officer. Public safety officers perform a variety of safety and security-related functions involved in the safeguarding of students, employees, visitors, and campus property. Specific responsibilities include patrolling and monitoring premises (both on-foot and by motorized vehicle) to prevent and detect signs of criminal, suspicious or unsafe activity; responding promptly to, investigating, and properly documenting calls for service in accordance with applicable policies and procedures including but not limited to: alarms, assisting with students/employees/visitors, directing traffic and parking, parking violations, emergency assistance, protective escorts, suspicious circumstances, locking/unlocking doors, de-escalating difficult situations; and observing and reporting hazardous or unusual conditions on campus. The Public Safety Department operates on a 24-hour/7-days per week schedule. Shifts are 12 hour shifts and are 3rd shift 7pm-7am.
Required Experience & Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional requirements include excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work and interact with diverse groups of people and to perform job responsibilities effectively and efficiently with tact, diplomacy, and good judgment; the ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergency situations; the ability to remain calm, be empathetic, and maintain impulse control when dealing with difficult situations; the ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine and take appropriate emergency action; strong communication skills (both verbal and written) to interview individuals and witnesses involved in incidents and to effectively and accurately document written reports; computer experience including email, internet, and Microsoft programs (e.g. Word, Excel). Preference will be given to candidates who possess experience in security and have had experience working in or living on a residential college campus. Physical requirements include walking indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions; walking through campus buildings and apartments including ascending and descending stairways. Full physical dexterity to perform job tasks that require bending, reaching, pushing/pulling and reaching above and below shoulder height. Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects weighing 50-75 lbs. unassisted, and greater than 75 lbs. with assistance. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
