International Studies Learning Goals

Students pursuing a major in international studies can expect to achieve the following goals:

  • Students should have foundational knowledge in international relations, international economics, and western civilization from the Renaissance to the present.
  • Students should have in-depth, interdisciplinary knowledge in at least one of the following three areas: transnational and global issues, developed countries, or developing countries.
  • Students should be able to demonstrate a level of written and oral communication skills in a foreign language equivalent to that of a language minor.
  • Students should be able to demonstrate analytical thinking including the formulation and defense of a thesis in both written and oral formats, as well as critiques of existing scholarship.
  • Students should be able to demonstrate the research skills necessary to the International Studies Program with emphasis in at least one discipline included in international studies coursework.
