The Society of Actuaries (SOA) has recognized Lycoming College’s actuarial science curriculum by naming Lycoming to its Universities and Colleges with Actuarial Programs (UCAP) list. The distinction indicates that Lycoming meets the SOA’s UCAP standards for actuarial education, expanding resources for Lycoming students who are pursuing an education and career in the profession.
The SOA, the world’s largest actuarial professional organization with more than 35,000 members across more than 100 countries, aims to empower its members to drive solutions to life’s financial risks. By earning a spot on the SOA’s UCAP list, the College is signaling that it is committed to providing a high-quality actuarial science education to undergraduate students that prepares them for success in the field.
"The Society of Actuaries has recognized that our curriculum prepares students to take and pass actuarial exams P and FM. Our program offers a two-course sequence geared to each of these exams, where students learn the exam content in the first course and spend an entire semester preparing for the actuarial exam in the second course."
Lycoming has achieved the UCAP–Introductory Curriculum tier owing to required coursework designed to prepare students for exams P and FM. Lycoming also requires that students demonstrate proficiency in Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) topic areas, including economics, accounting and finance, and mathematical sciences — all foundational to actuarial science.
"The Society of Actuaries has recognized that our curriculum prepares students to take and pass actuarial exams P and FM. Our program offers a two-course sequence geared to each of these exams, where students learn the exam content in the first course and spend an entire semester preparing for the actuarial exam in the second course. Students who pass one or both of these exams are well-positioned to secure an actuarial position upon graduation. In addition, Lycoming College has a fund to reimburse students the cost of taking actuarial examinations," said Mike Smith, Ph.D., assistant professor at Lycoming College and coordinator of the actuarial science program.
