Assistant Professor of Spanish

Maybel Mesa Morales holds a B.A in Hispanic language and literature from the University of Havana and earned a Ph.D. in Hispanic studies at Texas A&M University in 2018. Her teaching and scholarly interests focus on 20th- and 21st-century Latin American literature and cultural studies, Hispanic film, digital humanities, and instructed second language acquisition. Mesa Morales has held research and teaching positions in Cuba, Greece, and the United States. Prior to joining Lycoming College, she was a faculty member at Providence College for three years. Currently, she is working on a manuscript that explores intermedial strategies as an archival reconfiguration in contemporary Cuban artistic production. She applies an interdisciplinary theoretical framework that draws on theories of intermediality, transmedia narratives, archive and memory studies. Morales is part of the Gynocine Project team and has also collaborated as an OER creator with the Center for Open Educational Resources & Language Learning (COERLL) and other digital humanities projects. As an educator, she has expertise in curriculum development and instructional technology integration. Through her teaching, she aims at promoting digital literacy and multimodal awareness to prepare the students to thrive and succeed in a global and cyber-technological world.
