The Humanities Research Center (HRC) at Lycoming College will host a special screening of "She Rises Up," the acclaimed PBS NOW documentary directed by Maureen Castle Tusty, on Sept. 3, at 7 p.m., in the Trogner Presentation Room in the Krapf Gateway Center. The screening will be followed by a live Q&A session with producer and filmmaker Sally Lifland.
"She Rises Up" explores the intersection of women and poverty, following women across the globe who build businesses to lift their communities out of hardship. The film airs under the PBS NOW banner and has been featured in Variety and recognized at film festivals across New York City, Paris, Glasgow, Kyoto, London, and Tokyo.
"When students watch women in different parts of the world build something from nothing, they don't just learn about poverty or entrepreneurship. They learn to think across borders, to question assumptions, and to see themselves as part of a much larger story."

The documentary has earned widespread acclaim since its release, including Best of Show at the Depth of Field International Film Festival (2024), Best Feature Documentary at the Montreal Women Film Festival (2025), Best of Show at the WRPN Women's International Film Festival (2025), and Awards of Excellence from the IndieFEST Film Awards (2024), the Hispanic International Film Festival (2025), and the Accolade Global Film Competition (2025), among many others.
