Dr. Fred M. Thayer,
the director of the
Lycoming College Choir.

 

As professor of music and director of choral activities at Lycoming College, Fred Thayer conducts three choirs: Lycoming College Choir (110 members), Chamber Choir (28 members), and Tour Choir (40 members). He is the recipient of Lycoming College's Logan Richmond Professorship.

Thayer’s graduate degrees are in composition with a Doctorate of Musical Arts from Cornell University, studying with Karel Husa and Robert Palmer. As a member of ASCAP, he has received 24 annual ASCAP Standard Panel awards. His compositions include two operas, three works for orchestra, two works for band, and more than 75 choral works.

Having a long association with professional ensemble the Gregg Smith Singers, Thayer has served as their associate conductor at the summertime Adirondack Festivals of American Music in Saranac Lake, NY. Also, he is the associate conductor for the GSS's bi-annual concerts in New York City. The Gregg Smith Singers and the Adirondack Chamber Orchestra have jointly commissioned him to write ten works since 1982. If it's ever spring again, which was presented by the Lycoming Choir during the 2005–06 season, was commissioned in 2005 for the GSS's' 50th anniversary and was published in 2007 by Roger Dean Publishing Company.
