CHEMISTRY 108
LYCOMING COLLEGE FALL 1996

I. Course Description:

Chemistry 108 is an introduction to the principles of chemistry, especially inorganic chemistry. A topical outline is attached; the approach is basically descriptive with examples drawn from the health sciences. Along with Chemistry 115 (Brief Organic Chemistry), the course is designed for students who require only two semesters of chemistry. It is not suitable for students who wish to major in chemistry.

III. Texts and Required Items:

A. "Fundamentals of General, Organic, and Biochemistry", 5th Ed.; by John R. Holum (Wiley, 1994)

B. Bound laboratory Notebook (Freeman)

C. "Chemistry 108 Lab Manual" ($2 at lab check-in)

D. Lab Safety Glasses - obtainable at College Store

E. Electronic calculator with scientific notation

F. Lab key deposit - $5.00 (refundable upon key return)

IV. Course Format:

A. Lectures - MWF - 11:30 A.M.; attendance required. The lectures will outline the objectives of each chapter, explain the material, and provide illustrations of its utility. Lectures will follow the outline of the text very closely.

B. Recitation - Thur., 7:45 A.M. or 1:00 P.M.; attendance required. These periods will be used to discuss previously assigned and completed homework. Questions dealing with previous lecture topics will also be discussed.

C. Assigned Homework - A schedule of assigned homework problems is attached; these are designed to reinforce your learning of the material. Assigned homework is due every Wednesday at the beginning of the lecture. NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.

D. Laboratory - Tue., 8:45 - 11:35 A.M. or Thur., 2:00 - 4:50 P.M.; attendance required. The content and sequence of lab experiments has been chosen to reinforce lecture topics.

V. Grading Scheme:

A. The final course grade will be based on the quizzes, exams, laboratory, and homework grades, weighted as follows:

          Weekly quizzes (9)        15%
          Hour exams (3)            40%
          Final exam                20%
          Laboratory                15%
          Homework                  10%
                                  ______
          Total                    100%
B. Assignment of letter grades is based on the following scale:

A (90 - 100%); B (80-89%); C (70-79%); D(60-69%); F (<60%)
Letter grade pluses & minuses will also be assigned at the upper and lower ends of these ranges. Determination of the final grade will also be influenced by attendance, homework records, class participation, and lab performance and attitude; this is especially true for students with borderline averages.

VI. Office Hours:

Office hours will be posted after receipt of all students' schedules. In addition, there will be a sign-up sheet available in case you want to make a special appointment for any reason.
