Morris’ hoop dream takes him to Boston University

Shaun Morris ’05 is one of four brothers
who grew up playing youth basketball for
their father, John, and all of them went on to
play at the college level.
“I was always in a basketball family. I
knew I wanted to be involved in the game
somehow,” said the former Lycoming
standout, who is doing just that.
While Morris has one brother, Kevin ’08,
who is a lawyer, another who is in law school
and third in pharmaceutical sales, the former
Warriors point guard feels at times he doesn’t
have a “real” job as an assistant coach for
the men’s team at Boston University in the
competitive world of Division I college
basketball.
“You are not working a 9-to-5 job,” said
Morris, who ended his career with a then-school record 355 assists.
Morris is now in his third season at BU after two years with Williams
College, a Division III powerhouse in Williamstown, Mass. The Pennsylvania
high school product got his start in college coaching at Division I Towson,
where he spent four seasons on staff.
Morris, who graduated with a degree in marketing, helped Lycoming to a
mark of 53-27 in three years and a trip to the 2004 NCAA tournament. Morris
said his strength as an assistant is Xs and Os and in-game strategy for BU, the
2013-14 Patriot League favorites.
“Shaun is a rising star in the coaching world,” Joe Jones, the head coach at
Boston University, said when Morris joined the Terriers. “He spent the last two
seasons helping Williams College reach back-to-back Division III Final Fours.
His energy and passion for teaching the game of basketball was exactly what I
was looking for in a coach.”
With about 1,000 full-time assistants at the Division I level, Morris realizes
he is fortunate to have a position in college hoops. But unlike many of his
peers, many of whom hope to one day be a head coach, Morris has aspirations
beyond college hoops: He would like to one day work in the front office of a
National Basketball Association team.
“So far it has been a great ride,” Morris said.
