2013,149 – received the members of Allison and First; renamed Carlisle UMC

Brief History:
Organized United Brethren preaching in the Carlisle area began in 1843 when local preacher Christian Hershe from Lancaster County built a church house on his land 1 mile east of Carlisle.  Several pastors serving the rural Hershe circuit that surrounded Carlisle attempted to establish a work in the city.  The conference of 1891 eventually provided for such a mission, and the work was finally established in 1893 – meeting in the home of Rev. W.J. Houck at 9 E. South Street.  The congregation erected a building on West South Street in 1894, which was used until moving in 1921 into the Sunday School auditorium erect at West and Pomfret streets.  The sanctuary was completed in 1930, and a large Christian Education facility was added in 1967.  In 2012 Grace united with the Allison (former Methodist) and First (former Evangelical) congregations to form the Carlisle United Methodist Church and erect a new building on Spring Garden Street.

     1923,20 – church building dedicated

Brief History:

This historical congregation traces its beginning to 1810, when Christian Erb, father of future bishop Jacob Erb, moved his family from Lancaster County to Wormleysburg.  The Erb home became a regular preaching place and even hosted some annual conferences.  The congregation also worshiped at times in a brick building controlled by the Methodists and, until 1860, in a wooden school house on the southwest corner of Second and Locusts streets.  They then worshiped in a brick school house until dedicating their own church building December 17, 1871.  The present building was dedicated March 11, 1923.  A new sanctuary was added to the rear in 1961, and the old sanctuary remodeled for Sunday School.  The 1871 building, the 1923 building and at least one former parsonage were all located on various portions of the property occupied by the present complex.
In the face of declining membership and attendance, the congregation voted on July 15, 2012, to close.  The final service and transfer of the building took place August 5, 2012.

Final disposition:
The property was “transitioned” to Cornerstone Church of the Assembly of God denomination, which had been using part of the building for its services.
