METHODIST PROTESTANT PASTOR FILE

This file attempts to list all Methodist Protestant pastors who served congregations which once existed within the boundaries of the Susquehanna Conference of the United Methodist Church as defined in 2010 – i.e., when the Central Pennsylvania Conference received the Pennsylvania churches of the Wyoming Conference and was re-named the Susquehanna Conference.  Only a handful of those congregations were still in existence as United Methodist churches in 2010 as follows:

     Bedford County: Centerville

     Huntingdon County:  Cooks

Franklin County: Amberson, Doylesburg and Roxbury

     Lackawanna County: Cortez and Daleville

York County: Delta, and Fawn Grove, Mount Nebo and Mount Olivet

In 1939, when the Methodist Protestant Church joined with the Methodist Episcopal and Methodist Episcopal South denominations to form the Methodist Church, there were three MP conferences active within the forenamed boundaries:

1.      Pittsburgh Conference – generally covering the western part of the state, from the Allegheny highlands to the Ohio border.  This included Clearfield County.

2.      Maryland Conference – generally covering the southern part of the state that drains into the Potomac.  This included southern York, Franklin, Fulton and Bedford counties – and reached up into Path Valley.

3.      Eastern Conference – generally covering the rest of central and northeast Pennsylvania  This conference had been formed in 1911 by uniting two conferences:

a.       Pennsylvania Conference – which then included most MP congregations in central and northeast Pennsylvania.

b.      New York Conference – which then included (along with New York, New Jersey and all of New England), for reasons involving a previous 1866-75 MP split and re-union, the MP charges of Daleville, Mt. Cobb, Pittston and South Canaan.

Because theses conferences and their pastors served so many charges not included within the 2010 boundaries defined above, the years and charges of interest to this file are given in boldface type.  In addition the MP classification “unstationed” is given as “located” – the more widely used within United Methodism, even though the designations are not exactly identical.

Because this file involves so many of United Methodism’s predecessor denominations, and because the same conference names were used by multiple denominations, conference names will typically be followed by a denominational indicator:

EA = Evangelical Association                                 MES = Methodist Episcopal Church South

EUB = Evangelical United Brethren Church          MP = Methodist Protestant Church

EV = Evangelical Church                                        UB = United Brethren Church

M = Methodist Church                                            UE = United Evangelical Church

ME = Methodist Episcopal Church                         UM = United Methodist

and so, for example  “Pennsylvania Conference MP 1888, 43”  is a different reference than “Pennsylvania Conference UB 1888, 43.”

Note: Because the Pennsylvania Conference MP was so small and weak, its records are far from complete – and even its records at the national UM archives in Madison NJ are incomplete – with no known surviving journals from its founding in 1829 up to and including 1872.

Note: The second Mrs. Bichell later married a Mr. Wamsley [after 1940].

Note1: The President’s report in the 1905 journal states: July 26th, 1904, I received a letter from Rev. A. A. Bichell stating he had taken work in another denomination, and would not preach any more in Keen

Memorial Church, to which he had been appointed at the last Conference. August 1st, 1904, I gave him a letter setting forth the facts in the case. As he had not complied with his engagements to the Conference, and was still indebted (in a small amount) to the Board of Ministerial Education, the law prevented the

giving of such a testimonial as he might otherwise have been entitled to. I recommend that his name be stricken from the roll.

Note2: The March 1907 Wilmington Conference annual meeting assigned A.A. Bichell to Leipsic DE before he was received into the Baltimore Conference at their April 1907 annual meeting.

Note3: The 4/10/1910 Baltimore Sun, page 5, reports on the 1910 Maryland Conference MP annual conference as follows: The application of Rev. A. A. Bichell for admittance to the conference was refused, the committee reported. Mr. Bichell was a former Methodist Protestant minister. but went into the Methodist Episcopal Church in the Wilmington Conference. After spending some years in the latter denomination he asked to be reinstated in the Maryland Conference of the Methodist Protestant Church.

Note4: The 8/26/1911 Denton MD Journal, page 5, reports the following: Rev. Mr. Bichell Leaves Church. The Baltimore papers of Monday note that Rev. Albert A. Bichell, formerly of Burrsville, this county, has left the Remington Avenue Independent Methodist Church, Baltimore, of which he was pastor until a few days ago, when he sent in his resignation and left the city. Mrs. Bichell, the papers stated, recently left her husband, and the domestic trouble caused the minister to quit. The Evening Sun of Monday, speaking of the Bichell trouble said: "They are said to have started when Mr. Bichell, who recently conducted services on the Eastern Shore, failed to return when he promised his wife he would, and several disputes followed. Members of his congregation, hearing of it, the subject was soon common gossip about that section. When asked about her husband this morning Mrs. Bichell didn't "care to speak." Neighbors said they had not seen any sign of the missing minister, but some think that he may have gone back to the Eastern Shore. Mr. Bichell resigned August 6, and the church board, hearing of the pastor's dispute with his wife, requested both to appear before them last Monday night. Mr. Bichell did so but his wife was away and did not return for several days. As nothing definite could be decided upon concerning the dispute, the board refuted to accept the resignation.''

1870                retired

Note: John M. Elderdice is a brother to James Martin Elderdice.  Some sources give his death years as 1871.  Before opting to unite with the Methodist Protestant Church, he has a member at Toms Creek Methodist Episcopal church near Emmettsburg MD and license to exhort and to preach by the Gettysburg ME circuit.  The tombstone has deteriorated, and what find-a-grave reads as Wm. John Elderdice should probably be Rev. John Elderdice.

*Samuel Homan appears to have joined the 1866-75 split group called the Methodist Church that left the Pennsylvania Conference MP and then re-joined the New York Conference MP.  He was a New York Conference ministerial delegate to the 1875 General Conference of the Methodist Church.

Note: Samuel Homan is the father of Rev. Robert Homan (1854-?) of the Wyoming Conference.  A biographical sketch of Samuel Homan appears in Chaffee’s 1904 History of the Wyoming Conference, page 344.  He was the Pennsylvania Conference ministerial delegate to the 1862 General Conference.

Hughes, by his singing, has attracted young and old and the attendance is increasing.”  Mrs. Hughes is the daughter of Rev. Jacob Shapley (1843-1922) of the Eastern Conference MP.  Rev. Bennett’s 1878 Champions of the Church: Their Crimes and Punishments, page 973.  His unpleasant experiences in Ohio, New York and Illinois are the subject of many secular newspaper stories.  Many years after he left Ohio, for example, the 12/1/1886 Xenia Daily Gazette states: Rev. Tunis Titus Kendrick appears to be playing his little confidence pranks on the unsuspecting, as is learned from various letters of inquire received here inquiring about him.  His field of operation is now in Illinois.”
