Earth Day

The first Earth Day celebration took place on April 22, 1970 at the urging of US Senator Gaylord Nelson, who was irate over the environmental degradation that was occurring. Over 40 years later, the number of people that participate in this environmentally friendly day has gone from 20 million people to more than 500 million in 175 different countries! Because of its passionate concern for the environment, Lycoming Environmental Awareness Foundation (LEAF) decided to dedicate a whole week to heightening environmental awareness. Through speakers, various events and field trips, LEAF strives to continue to educate the Lycoming College community about the importance of protecting our environment. By doing this, the ultimate goal is to make a more eco-friendly campus and have students be environmentally conscious year-round.
