Glossary of Terms
Students who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 may not attend class, and should instead remain in/return to their room or home and immediately contact Health Services by email at Covid@lycoming.edu. Students will then receive further evaluative instructions on notifying their professors and initiating remote instruction. Call 570.321.4052 during regular business hours for answers to specific questions or with additional needs.
- Antigen Test
- Uses antibodies to detect the COVID-19 spike virus protein in nasal swabs. These tests will be administered and processed on the Lycoming campus for students and employees.
- CDC
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention- National Public Health Institute for the US
- CEAE
- Center for Enhanced Academic Experience- Lycoming College Department responsible for internships, travel abroad and other experiences meant to enhance and compliment the curriculum
- COVID 19
- Novel Corona virus originating in China during December 2019
- EPA registered disinfectant
- Disinfectant products that have been approved as safe and effective by the Environmental Protection Agency
- Face covering
- A cloth covering that extends over the nose and mouth used to help decrease the spread of infection.
- Hand hygiene
- The practice of keeping hands clean either with soap and water or with an waterless sanitizing product to help decrease the spread of infection
- IHE
- Institutes of Higher Education
- Isolation
- The act of separating a sick individual with a contagious disease from healthy individuals to help decrease the spread of infection
- Pandemic
- A global outbreak of a contagious disease for which there is currently no vaccine or treatment.
- PDE
- Pennsylvania Department of Education- The executive department of the state charged with publicly funded preschool, K-12 and adult educational budgeting, management and guidelines.
- PPE
- Personal Protective Equipment- including but not limited to gloves, masks, respirators, protective gowns, etc.
- Physical/social distancing
- The practice of maintaining a certain distance from other individuals in order to help decrease the spread of infection
- Quarantine
- The act of separating people who were exposed to a contagious disease to see if they become sick to decrease the spread of infection.
- Teams
- A unified communication and collaboration platform that combines persistent workplace chat, video meetings, file storage, and application integration
- Tele-medicine
- Telemedicine involves the use of audio, video or other electronic communications to interact with patients, consult with other healthcare provider and/or review medical information for the purpose of diagnosis, therapy, follow-up and/or education.
- Thermal scanners
- A device used to monitor body temperature and detect a fever using a thermal camera and computer software to locate the hottest point on the face and display the reading.
- UPMC
- University of Pittsburgh Medical Center- one of the local hospital systems in the Williamsport Area
- Webadvisor
- an online tool utilized at Lycoming College that allows qualified students to register, drop and add classes, make online payments, and access information in their student records.
- Zoom
- Provides videotelephony and online chat services through a cloud-based peer-to-peer software platform and is used for teleconferencing, telecommuting, distance education, and social relations.
