Astronomy/Physics Laboratory and Planetarium Manager

Melissa Kiehl joined the Lycoming College community in the summer of 2022 as the lab and planetarium manager. Kiehl grew up in Schuylkill County, Pa., and attended grade school in the Blue Mountain School District. She attended Lycoming College, double majoring in astronomy and physics and graduated with her bachelor’s degree in May 2008.

After graduation, Kiehl moved to Nevada and worked as a laboratory technician and chemist at an assay lab in Sparks, Nev. Shortly afterwards, Kiehl moved to Idaho where she pursued her secondary education certification with endorsements in mathematics and physics.

Kiehl began her teaching career in 2011 at North Idaho College where she worked as an adjunct instructor for mathematics and natural science departments. Kiehl was awarded Chairman’s Award from North Idaho College in 2013 for outstanding performance in a supporting role. In 2015, Kiehl decided to move into secondary education where she taught middle school for four years and high school for two years.

In her spare time, Kiehl enjoys reading, baking, and spending time with her husband, two daughters, and two cats.
