Lycoming College receives contribution from AT&T for new college preparation summer program

Lycoming College received a $35,000 contribution from AT&T to fund a new college preparation summer program. In its inaugural year, Lycoming College Prep will bring 20 rising high school seniors to Lycoming’s campus July 12-26 for a residential program designed to expose them to a residential liberal arts college and to offer guidance in the college preparation and application process. Lycoming students will serve as mentors during the two-week program.

“We greatly appreciate the generous support from AT&T that has made it possible for us to offer Lycoming College Prep,” said Lycoming President Kent Trachte. “This new program will help to open the doors of opportunity for many high-achieving, first-generation students.”

Students from Lycoming County’s school districts, as well as from KIPP and YES Prep, national public charter school networks that have partnered with Lycoming, are expected to participate. Lycoming College Prep will offer non-credit academic courses in the social and physical sciences, art and leadership workshops, a community-service experience and outdoor activities, including a kayaking excursion on the Susquehanna River.

J. Michael Schweder, president, AT&T Mid Atlantic, said the contribution is aligned with AT&T Aspire, one of the largest corporate commitments focused on helping more students graduate from high school ready for college and careers. In 2012, AT&T announced an additional quarter-billion-dollar expansion to the program, bringing the total commitment to $350 million since the program was launched in 2008. “At AT&T, we see supporting education as investing in the future because a well-educated workforce may be the single most important thing businesses can do to help students succeed in a digital, global economy,” said Schweder. “This contribution will help introduce young people to what’s possible if they stay in school and focus on their studies.”

In 2011, a $20,000 AT&T contribution supported the work of the Lycoming College Peer Tutoring Program.
