La Notre Dame
Educational opportunities go beyond the traditional classroom. Each semester all students participate in conversation tables conducted by native speakers. Our language clubs sponsor cultural events and provide service projects such as tutoring to local elementary and secondary school students. Some students gain work experience by serving as tutors, department assistants, or language laboratory monitors. Our junior-senior colloquium enables our French, German, and Spanish majors to meet together to discuss literary and cultural issues introduced by guest speakers.
Every spring a growing number of students are inducted into Phi Sigma Iota, an international honor society recognizing outstanding language students. Eligibility for the Delta Chi Chapter is based on five criteria: two courses completed at the 300 level or higher; a 3.5 GPA (approximately) in the studied language, departmental recommendation, committed enthusiasm for the study of language and culture as evidenced inside and outside the classroom and through the pursuit of international study, when possible, and class rank in the top 30%. Factors that will be taken into account for a positive departmental recommendation include no evidence of academic dishonesty, enthusiastic participation in events sponsored by the department, and perhaps a leadership role, such as effective FLTA mentor, conscientious student assistant, reliable lab monitor, tutor, and/or club officer. Seniors who are in their 2nd 300 or 400 level class are eligible to be considered for membership, with departmental recommendation.
Incoming freshmen who intend to major in languages are encouraged to compete for departmental scholarships. Information about our departmental scholarship can be found on our financial aid website.
Teaching assistants, who are native speakers of languages taught at Lycoming, help students with pronunciation and language proficiency. They also arrange readings and activities that engage students outside of a classroom setting with listening and learning about cultural practices of various countries. Below are photos from readings and events about Halloween and Christmas.
