Freshmen and Community Service

Community Service

All Lycoming College freshmen participate in a community service project during the fall semester. At Orientation, freshmen are given the opportunity to select their top preferences. The projects include:

  • Working with athletes at the Hand in Hand Festival—a Special Olympics event hosted annually in the Lycoming College Keiper Recreation Center
  • Doing grounds keeping and offering resident programming at West House, a local non-profit personal care home
  • Sorting and labeling clothes at Daniel’s Closet, a clothing bank for disadvantaged families in the greater Williamsport community
  • Clearing trails at Sunnybrook Meadows Riding, a therapeutic horse riding facility
  • Assisting with registration and set up at a Habitat for Humanity 5K race

Freshman Community service projects promote:

  • Bonding as members of their class
  • Understanding what it means to be part of a community and to help others within that community
  • Reflection and making the connection between service, education, and even future careers
