Fall 2021 COVID-19 Protocols for Intercollegiate Athletics At Lycoming College

Unvaccinated students who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, as well as vaccinated students who may have been exposed to COVID-19 and are experiencing symptoms, may not attend class and should instead remain in/return to their room or home. During regular business hours immediately contact Health Services at health@lycoming.edu and after business hours contact Public Safety at security@lycoming.edu or call (570) 321-4064.

Lycoming College intercollegiate athletic teams will follow the guidelines recommended by the NCAA Sports Science Institute in an August 2021 document titled Resocialization of College Sport: Fall Training and Competition as well as those adopted by the Presidents Council of the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC).

The NCAA guidance was developed in consultation with the NCAA COVID-19 Medical Advisory Group, the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Working Group and the Autonomy 5 Medical Advisory Group and takes into consideration available recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The MAC guidelines follow closely the NCAA guidance, except where more rigorous protocols have been adopted.

Masking

The NCAA Sports Science Institute has documented that there is a low risk of COVID-19 transmission during competition or practice. Accordingly, the NCAA guidance does not recommend masking during competition or practice either indoors or outdoors. Lycoming College will not require that student athletes wear masks during competition or training, with the exception of weight training.

The Middle Atlantic Conference member institutions, including Lycoming College, have agreed to the following protocols regarding face coverings/masks.

  • There will be universal team masking during travel including any coaches and staff who travel with the team.
  • For indoor sports, masking will be required for all personnel and student athletes regardless of vaccination status while in locker rooms, on the sideline or bench area, training rooms and other indoor spaces. Student-athletes will not be required to mask while actively competing.
  • For outdoor sports, universal masking will be required for all personnel and student-athletes who enter buildings (locker rooms, team rooms, training rooms, restrooms, etc.). Masking will not be required outdoors or during competition.

Testing

During the competitive season, the following testing protocols will be followed by Lycoming College teams.

  1. Fully Vaccinated Individuals
Per CDC guidance, the NCAA does not recommend testing vaccinated individuals or those within the 90-day window following infection either as routine surveillance or after exposure, unless symptoms warrant or based on a risk assessment of a documented close contact with COVID-19 (for example in a sustained increased transmission situation).
  2. Not Fully Vaccinated Individuals
During the competitive season (one week prior to the first competition through the end of the season), the College will conduct three times per week antigen testing. During the season, an antigen test will be administered the day of competition against other institutions.

Quarantining and Isolating

Lycoming College student athletes will follow the College’s guidelines regarding quarantining and isolating as well as protocols adopted by the Middle Atlantic Conference and NCAA Sports Science Institute regarding practice and competition.

Campus Spectator Policy

These campus spectator policies for athletic events conform with recommendations from the NCAA Sports Science Institute and the CDC; they have also been reviewed by the College’s COVID Response/Advisory Committee.

Outdoor Venues (e.g. football, soccer, lacrosse, softball)

It is well documented that the risk of transmission in outdoor settings is low, except when physical distancing cannot be maintained, especially when others are yelling or singing.

  • Spectators attending athletic contests are expected to carry a mask, but spectators are not required to wear the mask when they are able to maintain physical distance from others who are not members of the same household or campus unit. (A campus unit is a room, suite, or apartment.)
  • Spectators not wearing masks/face coverings are advised to maintain distance from others.
  • Spectators are not required to wear a mask when sitting in a group in close proximity where everyone in the group is known to be vaccinated.
  • Spectators are required to wear masks/face coverings when entering indoor spaces such as bathrooms and locker rooms.
  • Unvaccinated spectators are advised to consider wearing a mask when in close proximity to others.

Indoor Venues

The College’s policies for universal masking will apply to spectators at athletic events held in indoor venues

  • Spectators should put on a mask/face covering upon entering Lamade.
  • Spectators at indoor venues are required to wear a mask/face coverings except when drinking or eating.
