As an astrophysics major with a minor in computational science, Kaitlyn Sheriff ’24 of Landisburg, Pa., had her eye on an REU prize since freshman year. “Students frequently get emails from faculty with REU opportunities, and an upperclassman explained to me that REUs look great on graduate school applications and resumes. I started thinking about applying to REUs early in my education,” she said.

Christopher Kulp, Ph.D., professor of physics at Lycoming College, recently won the Mike Resnick Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Short Story by a New Author. His science fiction story titled, “What Would You Pay for a Second Chance?,” will be published in an upcoming edition of Galaxy’s Edge magazine.

Astrophysics major and international public policy minor Katherine Travis ’24 of Bernville, Pa., is the first Lycoming College student to win a place in the Department of Defense (DoD) SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program. The highly competitive program is designed to provide recipients in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math with full-ride scholarships, annual stipends, summer internships, and guaranteed civilian employment with the DoD upon graduation.

Lycoming College’s Detwiler Planetarium recently welcomed third grade students from Donald E. Schick Elementary School for their end-of-the-year educational field trip.
