Monsters Unleashed

Creating dinosaur fossils and imprints make MONSTER MANIA a very messy but enjoyable class to take at College for Kids and Teens. This course for second and third graders is taught by Carole and Brandon Zarzyczny, a mother and son team.

Alexis Forestal explained that the best part of Monster Mania was "making dinosaur bones.”

Megan Strassner said that her favorite thing that she did was "making fossil imprints.”

Andrew Meggleton was looking forward to "dissecting a shark.” When asked why he chose this class, Danny Dade replied, "I thought it would be fun. And it is."

On Wednesday, the Monster Mania class dissected a real shark. Inside the shark they discovered the biggest organ in a shark’s body, the liver. They learned about the brain, of which 75% is used for smell. They also found the heart and other various organs during the dissection.

For safety, the students wore safety goggles so the shark insides could not squirt out in anyone's eyes. They also wore gloves to prevent germs getting on their hands. The class put Vicks on their wrists so that whenever they smelled the shark they could put their wrists up to their nose and smell the Vicks instead.  After they got ready, they were able to touch the shark. When they touched it,  they found that when they rubbed the shark from the head it feels smooth, but when they rubbed the shark from the bottom, it feels like sandpaper.

If dinosaurs interest you or you like to dissect sharks and get messy, consider coming to Monster Mania next year.

Detectives on the Case

Solving mysteries and taking fingerprints makes BE A DETECTIVE #1 a very popular class to take at Lycoming College for Kids and Teens. This first period class for third and fourth graders is taught by Ms. Virginia Weigle in Heim room #111.

When asked what the best part of Be a Detective #1 class was, McKenna Hall replied, “Learning.”

Nicholas Desantl said that he liked “going outside” to solve the  mysteries.

Kaycee Puller said she “liked her teacher because she was really nice.”

Eric Drummond was asked what his favorite part of the class was. “Solving mysteries,” he replied.

One mystery this class had to solve was WHO STOLE THE DINOSAUR BONES? They took fingerprints of everyone they saw in the hall so that they could find the culprit. The class worked all week to find out who stole the dinosaur bones and finally solved the mystery by Friday.

Projects in Be a Detective #1 were making strawberry DNA, taking and decorating  mug shots, getting fingerprints and footprints, watching mystery movies, catching criminals, finding suspects, learning, and much more.

Come to Be a Detective #1 next year, become an investigator, and engage in useful detective and investigators skills.
