Learning Legos

Students learn more about science and math in a fun way in the LEGO SIMPLE MACHINES class at Lycoming College for Kids. Students learn about simple machines then make them out of Legos!

Mrs. Meredith Bigger makes it possible for 3rd and 4th graders to make simple machines for one week. Bigger teaches children how to build everyday devices with Legos and explains that simple machines are around us everywhere.

Students learn to build drawbridges, deck chairs, and a drumming machine that beats two sticks together. They also make cranes, windshield wipers, and a merry-go-round. They even got to make moving cars! Students were eager to learn as they worked in pairs.

“They are good problem solvers,” Bigger said. The students had an enjoyable time learning about pulleys, levers, gears, wheels, and axles.

Sophia Emmi said, “Yes, I probably would” when asked if she would return.

Bigger planned fun activities for the last day.

She concluded, “It’s fun; I would like to do it next year.”

Just Draw It!

Drawing, drawing, and more drawing! That’s what the students of the College for Kids YOUNG ARTIST: DRAWING program did. Geoffrey Haun and Micki Rebek made it possible for 2nd and 3rd grade students to learn and explore the nature of drawing.

In this class students learned to draw houses, flowers, volcanoes, buildings, and  scribbles. Some students even drew their teacher. Haun and Rebek taught children to create space in their drawings by overlapping shapes. They also taught jester drawings, a very fast sketch. Students used crayons, markers, and colored pencils.

When Rebekah Drumnond was asked if she draws at home, she said, “Yes, every day.” Other students draw three or four times a month. Haun answered, “I try to every day.”

Haun has been drawing and painting since he can remember. He also said that the students will leave with the knowledge of drawing with original ideas and new techniques. Haun said, “I love teaching it; it's so much fun! I                                                love the College for Kid classes!”

The last day of class the students hung their art on the wall of the building.

The students really enjoyed this class. Just draw it!
