Super Science

Super Science is a class for second and third graders and is instructed by Ms. Christina McGarvey.

The kids in the Super Science class say that they love this class and are learning stuff they never knew before!

Sara Beckman, a third grader, exclaimed, “I love Super Science! It’s a great way for learning because I learned a lot of stuff I never knew plus science hasn’t been this fun before!”

Dylan Armson, Aaron Raemore, Gillian Mitchell, and Neve Durrwatchter all said they “loved looking at the rocks and minerals.” The class also studied layers of the earth and fossils.

Tuesday Ms. McGarvey’s class studied anatomy. They checked the brain waves of Andrew Husinger and the ECG (heartbeats) of Austin Martin. They also were dissecting animals, and they saw a real animal’s kidney.Wednesday was oceanography; Thursday was astronomy, and Friday was chemistry and biology.

The students loved the creative activities Ms. McGarvey made up. To learn about earthquakes in Super Science Jessica Kreger said that they used graham crackers and pudding and shaped them like a tepee!

A Sense of Wonder

The Sense of Wonder class for second and third graders was taught by Ms. Micki Rebeck and Brenda Larson for the first time this year. The students in this class learned about the different senses available and how important our eyes, ears, mouth, nose, hands, and feet are in everyday living.

The students did a bunch of activities to learn about different senses. They also went outside to explore nature and beauty with all their senses.

Wednesday the students dissected a brain. Rachel Muggelton, Louise Lovecchio, and Seamus McGarvey all agreed that was their favorite part of the class.

Rhiannon Jessell and Christopher Houseknecht said, “I love going on the field trips!” Christopher especially liked when they went to Robert M. Sides.

The class also discussed how handicapped people use their senses with their disabilities.

The students went on field trips throughout the week to challenge their senses. Tuesday they went to Robert M. Sides, a local music store, to learn about the sense of hearing.

Wednesday they went to Robin’s Beauty Salon where they experienced the senses of touch and feel.

Thursday’s field trip to Johanna’s Bakery helped the students learn about smell and taste. Delicious! The class was assisted by Francis Daniele. The class got to eat sticky buns. The students got to feel and smell different types of dough and flour. The class also experienced how the bakers make a wedding cake.

The children worked on plenty of crafts Friday to end the week of fun.

Now you can see how WONDERful this new class is and how SENSUAL the senses can be!

Weatherman Jeff Jumper Jumps into the Weather with CFK

On July 27, 2007 Jeff Jumper, one of the local meteorologists, discussed many different things about weather. He created a PowerPoint and showed the students at Lycoming College for Kids and Teens all about tornadoes, flash floods, thunderstorms, lightning, and other weather patterns.

Jeff was born here in Pennsylvania in Scranton. He actually was raised in Luzerne County, but he is currently living in Montoursville.

He had an interest in weather ever since he was young. He switched his major at Penn State from electrical engineering to meteorology. He graduated in May 2006 with high distinction.

In Jeff’s spare time he volunteers as a firefighter with the Willing Hand Hose Company in Montoursville.

Now Jeff works as a meteorologist for WBRE-TV station based in Wilkes-Barre. He is an outdoor weatherman and news reporter.

Did you ever see one of Jeff Jumper’s live news reports? One that he showed the CFK students was when Jeff was on air and a strange man came from behind, jumping and screaming. That was funny!

On Wednesday when Jeff came to Lycoming College he taught the kids many things about the weather that was interesting. He also told the kids about what he does at work and what his job involves.

The big question: Why did Jeff come here? Well, Debbie Smith asked Jeff Jumper if he could come to Lycoming College for Kids and Teens to do a presentation about weather back in January 2007. Then they kept e-mailing each other and organized his visit.
