Hagrid is the half-giant, half-human in J. K. Rowling’s Harry
Potter series. And now he is here at Lycoming College for Kids and
Teens in Ms. Rae Temple’s class for third and fourth
graders called “Hagrid’s Mystical Creatures.”
Hagrid is the keeper of keys and grounds at Hogwarts
School for witchcraft and wizardry. He is the mystical creature who
loves his pets including Fluffy, the giant three-headed dog, and Aragog, the giant talking spider.
Hagrid’s favorite mystical creatures are dragons, especially
Norbert (a Norwegian ridgeback) whom he had to let go because
Professor Dumbledore, Hogwarts’ headmaster, wouldn’t
let Norbert stay on the school grounds.
Hagrid helped Harry and his friends through some troublesome times throughout the series.
Kyle Forsburg and Brenda Larson started this class last year as a spin-off of Rae Temple’s original Wizard Workshop courses.
According to Ben Flick one project the students made during the week was mystical creature footprint t-shirts. “We also played Muggle Quidditch,” he said. It’s a ball game
that includes freeze tag elements and is a popular competition in the Harry Potter series.
“This class is very fun and you get to do fun activities from making t-shirts
to gnome throwing,” Colin Ohnmeiss replied. “These are both based on the creatures.”
Marlayna Wilhelm explained that she like this class “because you get
to do many fun activities.”
Although the students did not go on any fieldtrips, they played games outside.
Ms. Temple said that this class is fun because “we bring Harry
Potter to life. One of J. K. Rowling’s books is about mythical creatures,
and I based the course on that.” |
