| The
Lycoming College Chamber Choir, under the direction of Dr. Fred
Thayer, will present Thomas Morley and All That Jazz on
Friday, November 1, 2002, at noon in Clarke Chapel as part of the
Concert at Noon series. Accompanying the choir will be Richard
Lakey on piano and Timothy Breon on string bass.
Mixing old music and texts with modern jazz
pieces is the focus of the concert’s repertoire. Included
will be works of George Shearing, a blind jazz pianist, who set
Shakespeare texts to jazz, madrigals from the 16th
century by Thomas Morley, John Rutter’s jazz setting of a
Shakespeare text, and two classical jazz works by Jerome Kern.
Each year the Lycoming College Chamber Choir
performs a diverse repertoire ranging from light, secular music, as
in the upcoming concert, to classic repertoire including major
sacred works.
"We have found that the style of singing
madrigals and modern day jazz is very similar," says Fred
Thayer, director of the choir. "It has been an
interesting experiment, mixing the old with the new."
The concert, which is free to the public, will
be held in Clarke Chapel.
