| Lycoming College's Mary L. Welch
Theatre presents the 1983 Pulitzer-prize winning play, "Glengarry
Glen Ross," written by David Mamet and directed by Kyle
Thatcher. Performances run October 15-17,
(Monday-Wednesday), beginning at 8:00 p.m.
The play takes place in a competitive New York real-estate
office. The salesmen are presented with the idea of a sales
contest and are given a strong incentive to succeed. The fist
prize is a Cadillac Eldorado, second prize is a set of steak
knives and third prize is a trip to the unemployment office. Only
"closers" will get the good sales leads and there is a
lot of pressure to succeed. In the race to the finish line,
robbery is committed which has unforeseen consequences for all of
the characters.
Producers, Jerry Tokofsky and Stanley R. Zupnik, turned "Glengarry
Glen Ross" into a movie in 1992 with an all-star cast that
included Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin Ed Harris, Alan
Arkin and Kevin Spacey.
Mamet began writing plays in 1972, and by 1975, New York
critics established him as a writer of the "new
realism," a style marked by naturalistic language and a small
number of characters in a contained environment.
Mamet also achieved acclaim as a motion-picture screenwriter
and director, with productions of "The Untouchables"
(1987) "Glengarry Glen Ross" (1992) and "American
Buffalo" (1996), all of which he wrote; and "House of
Games (1987), "Oleanna" (1994) and "The Winslow
Boy" (1996), which he both wrote and directed.
Kyle Thatcher, son of Mr. Norman D. Thatcher and Ms. Michelle
A. Goodrow, of Easton, Pa, makes his directing debut with "Glengarry
Glen Ross." Thatcher, a theatre major, has appeared in past
Lycoming plays that include "A View from the Bridge," by
Arthur Miller, "The Skin of Our Teeth, by Thornton Wilder and
