Two former death row
inmates who spent time on death row for crimes they did not commit
will speak at Lycoming on October 16 about the experience of facing
execution knowing they were innocent. They will speak in the Barclay
lecture Hall in the Heim Building at 7 pm. The presentation is free.
The former inmates,
William Nieves and Ray Krone, are in the midst of a two week,
statewide speaking tour, "From Death Row to Freedom: Voices of
Innocence."
Nieves, a native of
Philadelphia, spent seven years on Pennsylvania’s death row before
his exoneration and release two years ago. Krone, a resident of
Dover, Pa., was on death row in Arizona before being exonerated this
past spring. They will discuss the current danger of executing
innocent individuals and explain why they believe Pennsylvania’s
death penalty statute is critically flawed. Nieves and Krone will
travel throughout the state from October 9-23 and are calling on
Gov. Mark Schweiker to impost an immediate moratorium on executions,
as governors of Illinois and Maryland have done in their states.
