The music
department of Lycoming College will begin its fall concert series, Concerts
at Noon, on Friday, September 27, 2002, in Clarke Chapel.
The first on the series of five
concerts will be Beethoven on Love and Laughter. This concert
will capture Beethoven’s rich sense of humor that enlivens his
variations based on the song of Mozart’s comic birdcatcher
Papageno. Deeper sentiments will prevail in the song Adelaide and
the Cello Sonata No. 3 with tenor Frank Spencer, cellist
Andrew Rammon, and pianist Gary Boerckel.
Frank Spencer is an
instructor of voice at Lycoming College. He appeared as Alfredo in
the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra production of Die Fledermaus two
seasons ago, and this December he will be King Caspar in the WSO
production of Amahl and the Night Visitors.
Andrew Rammon is instructor
of cello and founder of the annual Cellobration concert at Lycoming.
He recently toured Italy and the eastern US as cellist with the
Eaken Trio, which has been nominated for a Grammy Award. He is also
principal cellist with the WSO and has performed under the direction
of maestros Charles Dutoit, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Valery
Gergiev.
The concert reveals the more
human side of Beethoven, whose heroism in the face of tragedy is
well known. The legendary composer had a rich sense of humor and,
although he never married, he fell deeply in love on several
occasions.
Other concerts in this series will
include French Music for Children on Friday, October 11; Thomas
Morley & all that Jazz on Friday, Nov. 1; Student
Recital on Friday, Nov. 22; and the Senior Recital on
Friday, December 6.
All events will be open to the
public, and all events are free. You are welcome to bring your lunch
to the noon concerts (no potato chips or crunchy foods, please).
Coffee, tea, and doughnuts will be provided.
