| The
Building and Grounds Committee of the Board of Trustees of
Lycoming College has named J. B.
Gibbons Construction of Williamsport as general contractor for
the construction of its new $8 million Recreation Center
The company was founded by John B.
Gibbons in 1967, and under his leadership steadily grew into one
of the area’s largest general contractors.
Subcontractors comprise an array of
local firms and regional firms, including Cipriani Electric of South Williamsport for
electrical construction and R & J. Ertel Inc. of Williamsport
for both plumbing and mechanical construction. Steel fabrication
and erection will be completed by Reynolds Iron Works and Allison
Crane and Rigging, both of Williamsport. The Montoursville office
of Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. will be responsible for earthwork.
Kenneth Crowl Inc. of Elysburg will be the masonry contractor, and
Susquehanna Supply Co. of Williamsport will provide concrete for
the project. Lear Roofing and Sheetmetal of Williamsport is the
roofing subcontractor.
"Our team of professionals at
Gibbons Construction has been eager to begin work on this terrific
project," said Patrick Marty, Vice President of Operations
for J.B. Gibbons Construction
"I am very happy that we could
work with local contractors on this building project," said
Robert Griesemer, Vice President and Treasurer of the Lycoming
College. "We are delighted that we can add to economy of
Williamsport."
"It's a proud and fitting
tribute to our late founder, John B. Gibbons, and to the firm's
long-time, local employees, " said Marty. We look forward to
working with Lycoming College as construction partners on this
beautiful design by John C. Haas Associates."
Architect for the project is John
C. Haas Associates of State College whose credits include Penn
State's Bryce Jordan Center.
The new recreational center is
designed as a two-story 54,000 square foot space with room for
four basketball courts. It will have a suspended 1/8-mile indoor
running track, an expanded weight room, and a new exercise and
fitness area. The building will be attached to the existing
physical education and recreation facility, which now houses
Lamade Gymnasium, the swimming pool and locker rooms. It will run
parallel to East Fourth Street.
The project also includes a number
of improvements to the existing facility, including a larger
lobby, two additional small locker rooms, and an upgraded fire and
security system.
The College moved past its last
hurdle to the construction when it gained a final approval from
City Council on October 3.
According to Griesemer, work will
start immediately. The College hopes to have the facility ready
for students by January of 2004.
