College will welcome 410 members of the Class of 2005 on Friday
August 24 with the traditional march through the David B Sykes
Gate on Market Street and.the the new student convocation which
will begin at 4:00 p.m. This is the largest freshman class for
Lycoming in twenty years..
Dr. Alston-Mills to Speak
Speaker for the New Student
Convocation is Brenda Alston-Mills, a graduate of Lycoming
College, who is Professor of Animal Science at North Carolina
State University in Raleigh.
Dr. Alston-Mills has had an
impressive career that has combine teaching and research in mammal
endocrinology. She has had over 25 research articles published in
professional journals. In 1997, she was admitted to the Academy of
Outstanding Teachers at North Carolina State University. In 1998,
she was named Outstanding Animal Science Faculty.
Dr. Alston-Mills received a
master's degree and her Ph.D., both in endocrinology, from
Michigan State University. Her most recent research has been on
the effects of milk protein.
Class of 2005
The Class of 2005 was drawn from
the largest applicant pool in recent history. While 75 % of the
class is from Pennsylvania, 20 states and 6 foreign countries are
also represented. A little less than 10% are commuter students,
reflecting the residential character of Lycoming College.
The quality of the incoming class
continues to rise, a trend that began about a decade ago. Some 80%
of the entrants are in the top half of their high school class.
The class also boasts 21 high school valedictorians and
salutatorians.
Sixteen members of the Class of
2005 join older siblings currently at the College.
