Six
Lycoming College Students are spending the summer in the Heim
Biology and Chemistry Building working on original research under
a grant from Merck Pharmaceutical Company. Each project is an
interdisciplinary project combining biology and chemistry.
This is the third year that Lycoming has received a $20,000
summer research grant from Merck
Breanne Wolfe '02 (Ashland, Pa.) and Christine Robbins '02
(Newport, Pa.) are working on the total synthesis of FGAR under
Dr. Chriss McDonald, professor of chemistry, and Dr. Jeff Newman,
assistant professor of biology.
Crystal McKinney '03 (Muncy, Pa.) and Kim Hengst '04 (Felton,
Pa.) are investigating the chemical differences in goldenrod
clones, and potential chemicals that affect goldenrod plants if
goldenrod flies choose to lay their eggs on a specific plant. They
are working under the direction of Dr. Michelle Briggs, assistant
professor of biology and Dr. Holly Bendorf, assistant professor of
chemistry.
Anthony Sowers '03 (McConnellsburg, Pa.) and Jennifer Clark '05
(Benton, Pa.) are analyzing leaf decomposition rates using a
fungal biomass chemical index to determine the health of the Big
Bear Creek and Mill Creek in Lycoming County. They are working
under Dr. Mel Zimmerman, professor of biology, and Dr. David
Franz, professor of chemistry.
In addition to the Merck scholars, Christine Colella '04
(Brick, NJ) is working on a special project under Dr. Holly
Bendorf on
