The play, set in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, tells
the story of the three Magrath sisters who have gathered to await news
of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is dying in the local
hospital.
Lenny, the oldest sister, is still unwed at thirty
and is facing diminishing marital prospects. Meg, the middle sister, has
returned to her hometown after a failed attempt at a singing career in
California. Babe, the youngest sister, is out of jail on bail after
having shot her husband in the stomach. The sisters’ troubles, while
grave and hilarious at the same time, are highlighted by their arrogant
cousin, Chick, and by a young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail
which trying desperately not to fall in love with her at the same time.
In the end, the play is a story of how its young characters leave their
pasts to seize the future—but the telling is so touching and hilarious
that it will linger in the mind long after the curtain has closed.
