College will host French Music For Children on Friday, October 11,
2002 in Clarke Chapel. The concert is part of the Concert at Noon
series.
The program will consist of two works. The
first of these is "Mother Goose," a set of five pieces for
two pianists composed by Maurice Ravel. The pieces are based on
traditional French children's stories: "Sleeping Beauty,"
"Tom Thumb," "The Empress of the Pagodas," and
"Beauty and the Beast." Maurice Ravel wrote "Mother
Goose" for the children of one of his closest friends. It has
been heard in virtually every country in the world and is considered
one of the classic musical creations for children.
"The Story of Babar the Little Elephant" is the first in a
beloved series of children's books written by Jean de Brunhoff and
his son Laurent. It describes Babar's childhood and his selection to
be king of the elephants. The composer Francis Poulenc first read
the story at the insistence of his nieces and nephews. Delighted
with Babar, he improvised charming and witty piano music to
accompany the story. This music so pleased his young relatives that
he decided to publish it. Now it is also one of the classic musical
compositions for children.
The performers will include Steve Hulslander
(narrator of Babar) a graduate of Lycoming College, class of 1974,
and a teacher at the West Branch School; Yvonne Lundquist, a 1991
graduate of Lycoming College, where she has taught piano since 1991;
and Gary Boerckel, Chair of the Music Department at Lycoming
College.
