The
Summer 2007 edition of “Brilliant Corners: A Journal of Jazz &
Literature” is now in bookstores. The journal, edited by Lycoming
College English professor Dr. Sascha Feinstein, remains the
only publication in the United States to focus on jazz-related
poetry, fiction and non-fiction.
The summer issue features interviews with
Chris Raschka and the late Whitney Balliett. This issue’s
cover art, “Sun Ra Is Dreaming,” was created by Raschka.
Raschka has written and illustrated many
children’s books, including three jazz-related works: “Charlie
Parker Played Bebop,” “Mysterious Thelonious,” and “Giant Steps.” He
has illustrated more than 40 books, and four times his works have
been placed among the Ten Best Illustrated Books of the Year by “The
New York Times Book Review.” He lives in New York City.
Balliett joined the staff of “The New Yorker”
in 1951and became its jazz critic in 1957. His numerous books
include “American Musicians II,” “American Singers,” “Collected
Works: A Journal of Jazz 1954-2000,” and “New York Voices.” He
interviewed hundreds of musicians and wrote about them in his
essays. Balliett won a 1996 Academy Award in Literature from the
American Academy of Arts and Letters. The journal interview took
place in his Manhattan apartment on January 7, 1999, but was not
published until now. Balliett died on February 1, 2007.
The summer issue also features the works of
Kim Addonizio, author of four collections of poetry, most
recently “What Is This Thing Called Love”; Gene Bertoncini, a
jazz guitarist who has recorded numerous albums, including the
recently released “Quiet Now”; William Ford, author of two
