A swimsuit and
waders are the official work clothes for seven Lycoming College
students who are spending the summer monitoring streams in the
Susquehanna Watershed as part of the Clean Water Institute at
Lycoming College.
The students
include :
Arianna Brawn (Portsmouth, N.H.),
Alex Collins (Loyalsock), Tyler Machamer (Williamsport, Pa.),
Brittane Miller (Turbotville, Pa.),
Kate Olsen (Muncy, Pa.),
Lindsey Postaski (Milford, Pa.),
Michelle Taylor (Montoursville, Pa.), and
Neihl Williamson (Jersey Shore, Pa.).
Under
the supervision of Dr. Mel Zimmerman, professor of biology and
founding director of the Clean Water Institute, and Dr. Peter
Petokas, Research Associate with the Clean Water Institute...the students will
be testing water and surveying aquatic life along Lycoming Creek (Near
Roaring Branch), West Branch of the Susquehanna between Lock Haven
and Sunbury, the PPL Montour Preserve, Mill Creek and Rose Valley,
and Eagles Mere Lake, Lake Makoma, Big Bear Creek, Buffalo Creek, Blackhole Creek,
Pine Creek, Muncy Creek, White Deer Creek, and Loyalsock Creek.
In
addition, the students will be conducting a farm soil survey and
locating dry hydrants in the Endless Mountain region and working
with Cromaglass Corporation to test the efficiency of one of their
sewage treatment systems
Funding
for these projects is supported by grants from Degenstein
Foundation, PA Fish and Boat Commission, Growing Greener Grants to
Lycoming College CWI (with partners from SRHCES), and a Growing
Greener Grant to Lycoming Creek Watershed Association. |
