Judge John E. Jones III, the federal Pennsylvania
judge who ruled that intelligent design should not be taught in
public schools, will speak at Lycoming College on Thursday, March
9, as part of the astronomy/ physics colloquium at 12 noon
in the Barclay Lecture Hall (G-11) of the Heim Building.The
ruling, the first legal test of the teaching of intelligent design
in a public high school biology class room, came in December after a six-week trial to
determine whether a Dover, Pa., school board could issue policy
requiring science teachers to inform students of ''gaps" in Charles
Darwin's theory of evolution and to share competing views, including
intelligent design.
Jones is a lifelong Republican who was appointed to the bench in
2002 by President George W. Bush. A graduate of Dickinson College
and Dickinson School of Law, the Pottsville native was in private
practice for 22 years before being appointed to the bench.
The lecture is free and the public is invited to attend.
