WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Step Afrika!, an explosive
percussive dance ensemble, performs at Lycoming College on October
26. The 4 p.m. performance, sponsored by the Lycoming College Black
Student Union and the Campus Activities Board, takes place in Clarke
Chapel.
Founded in December, 1996, the company
highlights the African-American art form of stepping and its links
to dance traditions around the world. Step Afrika! has performed all
over the Europe, America and South Africa. It is on a 60-stop tour
of colleges and universities from Maine to Mississippi.
Reviewers describe the company's performance
as a "high energy brand of precision stepping"-a dance genre
considered by some to be one of the most exciting created by
Americans in the 21st century---and its performers "an enormously
powerful ensemble of dancers.
Included in the repertoire are stepping, tap,
South African dances including Zulu and gumboot, modern, hip-hop,
house and freestyle dancing
The company is by product of the Step Afrika
International Cultural Festival, held annually in Soweto, South
Africa. Based in Washington, D.C., Step Afrika! is a non-profit
organization sponsored in part by the Washington, D.C. Commission of
the Arts and Humanities, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
