WILLIAMSPORT, PA – Frances Moore Lappé, an
internationally recognized speaker on world hunger and food
development, will give a talk at Lycoming College on November 17 at
7 pm in the Barclay Lecture Hall (Heim G11)
Lappé, the author of the bestseller, Diet
for a Small Planet and one of the founders of the organic food
movement, is also the co-founder two national
organizations addressing hunger, including The Institute for Food
Development Policy, also called Food First.
Since 1987 Lappé has
been awarded 16 honorary doctorates, written 13 books and was the
fourth American to receive the Right Livelihood Award, which is
considered to be an alternative Nobel Prize.
Skilled at translating complicated issues into
motivational messages and solutions, Lappé’s presentation aims to
probe the thought traps that often block the solutions to world
hunger and food distribution; as well as discuss the growing problem
of corporate control leading to genetically modified and controlled
foods. Most importantly, Lappé’s talk with explain the problem, shed
light on solutions and show you how you can make a difference.
In an article Lappé published in 2001, she
expresses that "Hunger is not caused by a scarcity of food but by a
scarcity of democracy. Thus it can never be solved by new
technologies, even if they proved to be safe."
