LYCOMING COLLEGE PRESENTS STORY OF
THE FIRST WOMAN IN SPACE |
|
WILLIAMSPORT, PA –Lycoming college will present
"The First Lady of Space – Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova" on
October 14th as the fourth study in the Fall Symposium
series, "Space –A Revolution in Perspective." The presentation, a
dramatic autobiographical reading starring Destiny Zeiders, will be
held in the Mary L. Welch Theatre at 8:00 p.m. Admission is free to
the public.
Born in 1937, Valentina Vladimirovna
Tereshkova, a Soviet cosmonaut, was the first woman to orbit the
earth. At the age of 18, soon after starting work in a textile mill,
Tereshkova joined an amateur parachuting club. She applied to become
a cosmonaut six years later when the Soviet space program began to
consider sending women into space.

Because there were not many female pilots, women
parachutists made an excellent field from which to choose.
Tereshkova, three other parachutists, and one female pilot all
trained to be cosmonauts, but Tereshkova was the only one of the
group to go into space.
IShe
took her historic flight in the Soviet space ship, Vostok 6,
from June 16-16, 1963 and orbited the earth 48 times. Tereshkova
received the Order of Lenin and Hero of the Soviet Union awards for
her historic flight.
Destiny Zeiders, a Lycoming College theatre
major, may have a special feeling for Tereshkova since visiting St.
Petersburg, Russia, this summer as part of Lycoming College’s
internship in international business. |
