Note: When the Methodist Episcopal Church South [MES] was formed in 1844, the churches in the Shenandoah Valley remained in the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church [ME]. After the war, in 1866, a Baltimore Conference MES was formed – mostly of churches and pastors of the Baltimore Conference [ME]. This was the conference in which John P. Hall settled. John P. Hall is credited with founding the ME South congregation in Boyds MD in 1865. His name appears in the 12/11/1876 Congressional Record as one of the petitioners that the Southern Methodist Publishing House “be paid for the use of its facilities by the United States Army in the years 1864 and 1865.”

Apparently both he and his wife returned from India with illnesses from which they never fully recovered. His 4/19/1865 address occasioned by the death of President Lincoln has been reprinted in various contexts. After his withdrawal from the Central Pennsylvania Conference in 1866. William W. Hicks maintained an interest in, if not a direct connection with, the work in India and wrote at least one related book, The Sanctuary.
