*Apparently Rev. Harman automatically became a member of the West Nebraska Conference when it moved from Mission to Conference status, and he had to transfer back to the Northwest Iowa Conference.

 

Note: Harry C. Harman was admitted on trial in October 1879, a few days before his seventeenth birthday.  Two years later, the 1881 Nebraska Conference journal states that “Harry C. Harman was to be ordained a Deacon under the Missionary rule, if he should be appointed as a missionary to the West Nebraska Mission.”

Heck is a cousin of William Waters Stevens (1853-1909) of the Wisconsin Conference, Emory Miller Stevens (1858-1937), and Frank Gilbert Haven Stevens (1874-1964) of the California Conference.  His mother Rachel B. Stevens Heck (Mrs. Daniel) was a member of the Stevens family that has produced dozens of Methodist clergy – including her brother William Henry Stevens, father of Emory Miller Stevens.

Hicks appear in an 1863 photograph of the 1863 annual meeting of the India Mission housed in the mission collection at the conference archives.  Apparently both he and his wife returned from India with illnesses from which they never fully recovered.  His 4/19/1865 address occasioned by the death of President Lincoln has been reprinted in various contexts.  After his withdrawal from the Central Pennsylvania Conference in 1866. William W. Hicks maintained an interest in, if not a direct connection with, the work in India and wrote at least one related book, The Sanctuary.
