REV. WILLIAM RABER (1824-1875)

William B. Raber was born February 22, 1824, and converted at a revival meeting conducted by Rev. Jacob C. Smith February 19, 1846, in the Littlestown UB church.  At the time, Raber was boarding with the Jacob H. Bishop family and conducting the Littlestown Academy.  Granted a quarterly conference preaching license by the Littlestown circuit, he exhorted locally and continued teaching at the academy through the end of the 1846-47 school year.  At that time he was appointed to assist Rev. James M. Bishop for the remainder of the conference year on the Chambersburg circuit, and he began keeping the journal here presented.  Admitted into the Pennsylvania Confer-ence in 1848, he was ordained in 1850.

Raber entered the itinerancy at precisely the right time to help trans-form the rugged pre-Civil War UB circuit rider into the more cultured and parsonage-oriented minister necessary to lead the denomination into the twentieth century.  According to his conference obituary, he was "a man of considerable education, a close student and a rapid thinker" and "few men were better posted in literature and science of the day than he."  Conference historian Paul Holdcraft declares, "He had unusual ability to lead young men into the Christian ministry, though insisting that they must be divinely called."

Beginning with the day he left his parents' home in East Berlin to take his place on his first circuit, the journal is an honest and amazing look into the life of a young, dedicated itinerant -- first as a single man moving about a vast circuit, then as a husband-father-pastor struggling to faithfully serve his Lord in an imperfect world.

During his twenty-eight years of ministry, he served ten years as conference secretary, was elected by his peers to attend four General Conferences, and filled the following appointments.

1847-48  assisted James M. Bishop on Chambersburg circuit beginning in July

1848-49  York circuit

1849-51  Chambersburg circuit

1851-53  Perry circuit

1853-54  Dover circuit

1854-57  York station

1857-60  Chambersburg station

1860-63  presiding elder, York district

1863-67  Mechanicsburg station

1867-71  presiding elder, York district

1871-75  York station

Rev. Raber died February 11, 1875.  Had he lived until the 1889 denominational split, it would be difficult to predict with which faction he might have sided.  Given his conservative nature, his commitment to the proper over the popular, the stance of some of his respected associates and home congregation at Littlestown, and the strong opposition to secret societies shown in his 1855 book The Devil and Some of His Doings, it is possible that William Raber might have become the most prominent and respected member of the Pennsylvania Conference to side with the seceding minority.

WILLIAM B. RABER'S JOURNAL

1847-1852

With this book commences the itinerant career of W.B. Raber, in the Pennsylvania Conference, among the United Brethren in Christ.

It contains his travels, where he preached, with whom he lodged and the particulars of the meetings he held; also the marriages, baptisms, funeral sermons; the names of the persons, the time the thing took place, with a great many other things that came under his immediate observation.

His temptations, trials, difficulties, oppositions and perplexities are not forgotten.  An account of campmeetings, conferences, and everything connected with an itinerant minister's life and travels is noticed.

            Written by Himself

August 1847

Sunday, 1st.  10 o'clock; brother Bishop preached in Southampton church.  Candle light; I preached in the same church, the word spoken appeared to have effect, we had an interesting meeting.  Lodged with brother George Trone.

Monday, 2nd.  Crossed the South Mountain (a dreary road, no house for more than 7 miles!) to Arendtsville, Middleburg and Heidlersburg to Berlin.  Stayed with my parents until the 9th.  Attended German Reformed preaching (and a dry sermon it was), Sunday School, and a prayer meeting.

Monday, 9th.  Rode through Spring Forge and Jefferson to a camp meeting on the land of brother D. Shue.  Twenty-eight tents.

Wednesday, 11th.  Preached on the ground to a vast collection of people from "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked."  A good camp meeting.

Thursday, 12th.  With reluctance I left the camp and passed through Jefferson (where I met my brother Frederic on his way to camp), Spring Forge, Berlin (where I stopped a few hours), New Chester and Hunterstown to mother Criswell's and tarried.

Friday, 13th.  Rode through Gettysburg, Cashtown, Fayetteville and Chambersburg to brother Lemaster's.  Held prayer meeting and lodged.

Sunday, 15th.  Preached in the Red school house at 10 o'clock and at candle light in Marion.  Lodged with father John Myers.

Monday, 16th.  Father Myers accompanied me to a camp meeting, held by the Methodists, near Greencastle.  A dry time they had.  Returned to brother Myers'.

Thursday, 19th.  Passed through Funkstown to brother Fetterhoff's and tarried.

Friday, 20th.  Passed through Chambersburg to brother Stouffer's and tarried.  This brother seems to have the world at heart.  The Lord release him from his bondage!

Saturday, 21st.  Travelled to Hershe's church, below Carlisle, and lodged with brother Jacob Hershe.

5

Sunday, 22nd.  Brother Colestock preached.  Followed him with a German exhortation.  This was the first attempt I made in the German.  In the afternoon I preached for brother Colestock in Young's church and lodged with brother Young.

Monday, 23rd.  Rode through Hogestown and Shiremanstown to a camp on Shoop's Station and preached at candle light.

Saturday, 28th.  Camp closed.  A pretty good meeting.  Some disturbance with the "rude fellows of the baser sort."  Went with a friend in the cars to Harrisburg and lodged with Mr. George Welker.

Sunday, 29th.  Returned to Shiremanstown and preached at 10 o'clock in Shoop's church for brother Kessler from "Continue in prayer."  Afternoon; went with brother Balmer to Fishing Creek and preached from Hebrews 9:27.  In the evening I preached in Shoop's church again from Luke 13:5. A good meeting, large congregation, some mourners and conversions.

Monday, 30th.  Rode with brother George Miller to a camp in Perry County, near Bloomfield, on the land of Mr. Jacob Bruner, and exhorted with liberty.  Some wept, some shouted, some fell like dead, and others prayed for mercy.

Tuesday, 31st.  Preached in the evening to a great collection of people.

September 1847

Wednesday, 1st.  Camp closed.  There was much good done if we dare judge from appearance.  Returned to brother Samuel Shoop's and spent Thursday and Friday with this fine family.

Saturday, 4th.  Rode to Berlin and tarried with my parents.

Sunday, 5th.  Rode through Abbottstown and Hanover to Littlestown and heard brother John Fohl preach.  Was much refreshed to worship God with my old classmates.  Exhorted them to good.  Lodged with brother Simon Bishop.

Monday, 6th.  Rode to camp on our Chambersburg Circuit.  The meeting was well attended and quite interesting.  Continued five days.

Saturday, 11th.  Father Wingert accompanied me to Southampton church, below Shippensburg, where we had a "protracted meeting."  Preached probably one half dozen times to little effect.  The brethren seemed cold as icebergs, and dead as flies that cause the ointment to stink!

Friday, 17th.  Preached at Stony Point and lodged with brother Aughinbaugh.

Saturday, 18th.  Preached at Mount Vernon and lodged with brother J. D. Coldsmith.

Sunday, 19th.  10 o'clock; rained.  Did not reach my appointment at Mount Rock.  Evening; preached in Greenvillage and lodged with brother Flud.

Monday, 20th.  Preached in Shively's school house and lodged with brother Jacob Shively.

Tuesday, 21.  Preached at Falling Spring and lodged with brother Keller.

Wednesday, 22nd.  Rode to brother George Fetterhoff's and tarried.  Here I have my home.  A kind, pious and precious family.

Thursday, 23rd.  Preached and lodged at brother Nicholas'.

Friday, 24th.  Rained.  Did not preach.  Lodged with brother Philip Lemaster.

6

Saturday, 25th.  Preached in Gudtner's school house and lodged with brother Polmer.  This is a neighborhood where the principles of universalism are distributed by one by the name of Kuhn or Coon, who does much harm and gets some followers.  God pity him!

Sunday, 26th.  Preached at the Red school house.  Evening; preached in Marion and lodged with father Myers.

Monday, 27th.  Preached at New Franklin and lodged with brother Jacob Stover.

Tuesday, 28th.  Preached in Stumptown and lodged with brother Jacob Shelly.

Wednesday, 29th.  Preached in Mount Zion church and lodged with brother Adam Small.

Thursday, 30th.  Rode home to brother Fetterhoff's and tarried.

October 1847

            Friday, 1st.  Remained at home.

Saturday, 2nd.  Preached at Falling Spring and lodged with brother Keller.

Sunday, 3rd.  10 o'clock; preached in Fetterhoff's chapel.  In the evening, preached in Shively's school house.  Lodged with brother Jacob Shively.

Monday, 4th.  Rode to a "protracted meeting" at Stony Point.  Preached several times during the meeting.  One evening whilst I was exhorting, a wicked young man fell down as dead.  After recovering, he refused praying.  His case of ever being converted, I think, is doubtful.  During this meeting about one dozen professed conversion.

Thursday, 7th.  Friday, 8th.  Spent with brother Bishop.

Saturday, 9th.  Preached at Stony Point from Proverbs 14:32.  Lodged with brother Bowers.

Saturday, 16th.  Preached at Mount Vernon and lodged with brother Coldsmith.

Sunday, 17th.  Preached at Mount Rock school house.  Lodged with brother Bixler.

Monday, 18th.  Rode to my parents in Berlin and tarried over two days.

Thursday, 21st.  Rode to Littlestown.  Held prayer meeting at sister Sally Bishop's.  Her son *Edmund is very ill.  Lodged with brother Levi Bishop.  *Edmund died soon after my visit.

Friday, 22nd.  Rode to brother Lemaster's, preached and lodged.

Saturday, 23rd.  Preached and lodged at brother Polmer's.

Sunday, 24th.  Preached in the German language at the Red school house.  Candle light; preached in English at the same place and lodged with brother Strock.

7

Monday, 25th.  Preached in New Franklin and lodged with brother Stover.

Tuesday, 26th.  Preached in Stumptown and lodged with brother Jacob Shelly.

Wednesday, 27th.  A wicked man had a corn husking near Mount Zion church and there was a great glorying among the people, in their own shame.  Held prayer meeting with a few people and lodged with brother Small.

Thursday, 28th.  Preached in the Red school house and lodged with brother Homman.

Friday, 29th.  Preached in a large Presbyterian church at Rocky Spring.  There were 8 mourners forward at the altar.  Prospects for a glorious revival.  Lodged with father Samuel Huber.

Saturday, 30th.  Preached at Falling Spring and lodged with brother Whitmore.

Sunday, 31st.  10 o'clock; preached at Fetterhoff's chapel.  Evening; preached at Shively's school house and lodged with brother Shively.

November 1847

Monday, 1st.  Went to a protracted meeting at Mount Rock.  Continued until Saturday, 6th.  Several converted.  This meeting seemed to be a strange affair in the neighborhood.  Marvelous in the eyes of the people are the workings of God.

Sunday, 7th.  Attended the "twelve week meeting" among the local force at brother Sleichter's.  In the evening I preached in Greenvillage and lodged with brother Flud.

Monday, 8th.  Went to a protracted meeting in Marion.  This meeting I carried on until the 27th.  Preached nearly every evening.  A gracious outpouring of God's spirit was realized in this neighborhood.  Evening after evening the church was crowded, sometimes to overflowing.  Professors of religion had the whole armor of God upon them!  Sinners were convicted!  Mourners were converted by half dozens!  Oppositions raged high!  The waves of the Enemy rolled formidably! But the strong man armed was divested of his power!  Israel prevailed!  Praises emanated from many warm hearts!  A more glorious work of grace I never saw!  The Lutherans, Methodists, etc. threw their efforts into the work, and the "Car of Salvation" moved gloriously forward.  As a natural consequence, I enjoyed myself well.  This meeting spread an influence over the town and country that will not be easily destroyed.  The Lord continue to work!  Let the fire burn!

Saturday, 27th.  Commenced a big meeting in New Franklin.  Five or six preached, being present.  I was excused from laboring much, being much worn out at the revival at Marion.  The meeting was good, but no conversions.

December 1847

Wednesday, 1st.  Rode home to brother Fetterhoff's and stayed at home Thursday and Friday.

Saturday, 4th.  Preached at Stony Point and lodged with brother William Aughinbaugh, who seemed somewhat cold toward me.  What is wrong I cannot tell.

Sunday, 5th.  Preached at Southampton church.  Evening; preached in Greenvillage.  Lodged with brother Flud.

8

Monday, 6th.  Went to the 3rd quarterly meeting at Fetterhoff's chapel.  Continued the meeting for 6 or 7 days.  Preached four times.  Exhorted often.  This was a good meeting.  Many embraced religion.  It will be remembered that where I went to meetings on Monday, they had been commenced on the Saturday previous by my colleague.  When I came he generally left to fill his appointments, or return home to his family.

Wednesday, 15th.  Attended prayer meeting at brother Henry Diehl's, a Lutheran, where we realized a special outpouring of the Spirit.  Lodged with brother Homman.

Thursday, 16th.  Prayer meeting in the Red school house.  Lodged with brother Homman again.

Friday, 17th.  Preached and lodged at brother Philip Lemaster's.

Saturday, 18th.  Commenced a protracted meeting in Greenvillage.  Several conversions and a powerful manifestation of the presence of God.

Friday, 24th.  Rode to Marion and tarried with brother Henry Hawbaker.

Saturday, 25th.  Christmas.  Commenced a big meeting in Stumptown.  No conversions.  Nothing special at this meeting.  Prejudice has a big place in the hearts of the people of this town and vicinity.  Although visiting from house to house, reading, singing, praying, and speaking personally to the people upon religious subjects, little good was seen.

Thursday, 30th.  Rode to brother Homman's and tarried.

Friday, 31st.  Held Watch Night in the Red school house.  Between 12 and 1 o'clock I preached from "This year thou shalt die" from Jeremiah 28:16.  A very good meeting.

January 1848

Saturday, 1st.  Another year has fled to the past!  Here I stand upon the threshold of a new one!  I look back and find many changes!  I look into the future but can tell nothing!  A kind Providence has wisely hid from my vision what shall this year befall me!  But the changes will be many!  This will be a year as the past -- "A time to die."  Shall I die this year?  My eyes are turned inward, my face directed upward, and my heart says "The will of the Lord be done."  Glory, for a submission of soul to God!  My mind filled with many reflections, I rode to Stony Point and preached. Had a good meeting.  Lodged with brother William Flick.

Sunday, 2nd.  10 o'clock; preached with difficulty  at the Southampton church.  Evening; preached in Greenvillage.  Lodged with brother Flud.

Monday, 3rd.  Rode to brother Fetterhoff's.

Tuesday, 4th.  Attended a Methodist meeting in Funkstown and exhorted.  Dry season.  A poor business for a Methodist preacher to send his members to hell for the same sin he, to all appearance, is guilty of himself.  Lodged at home (brother Fetterhoff's).

Wednesday, 5th.  Preached at Mount Vernon.  Lodged with brother Coldsmith.

Thursday, 6th.  Preached at Mount Rock school house.  Lodged with brother Bixler.

Friday, 7th.  Preached in Plough's school house.  Lodged with brother Thomas.

Saturday, 8th.  Our last quarterly meeting commenced at Marion.  The brethren in the ministry pitied me; consequently, I did not preach until...

9

Thursday, 13th.  Preached from Ecclesiastes 9:5.

Friday, 14th.  Preached from Proverbs 23:26, the first part of the verse.

Saturday, 15th.  Preached at Gudtner's school house.  Lodged with brother Polmer.

Sunday, 16th.  10 o'clock; preached in the Red school house.  Candle light; preached in Marion from James 1:22.  Meeting still going on.  A happy season among the brethren and a number of conversions.  A change has taken place among the "old church people."  They have become prejudiced and bigoted since our revival in November.  May God drive selfishness out of their hearts, and may pure love possess their souls!

Monday, 17th.  This day whilst riding to my appointment, I took a lane not travelled much.  My horse got into a sink hole and fell in up to his breast or neck!  The Lord saved me from hurt!  Although I got wet and muddy, I sustained no injury.  Bless a merciful Preserver!  Preached in New Franklin.  Lodged with brother Stover.

Tuesday, 18th.  Returned to Marion and preached from "Be not deceived, God is not mocked."  Happy time!  Meeting still going on.

Wednesday, 19th.  Had great temptation!  The devil attacked me on every hand!  God helped me, and I came off victor!  Preached at Mount Zion.  Lodged with brother Adam Small.

Thursday, 20th.  Preached at Fetterhoff's chapel and tarried at home.

Saturday, 22nd.  Commenced a big meeting at Falling Spring.  God in mercy visited this appointment.  Good was done in his name.

Saturday, 29th.  Preached at Stony Point.  Lodged with sister Stombaugh.

Sunday, 30th.  Preached at Southampton church in the morning and in the evening in Greenvillage.  Lodged with brother Flud.

Monday, 31st.  Met brother Bishop, rode to brother Stover's and tarried.

February 1848

Tuesday, 1st.  Held prayer meeting at brother Diehl's.  This was a cold and lifeless meeting!  Lodged with brother Homman.

Wednesday, 2nd.  Held prayer meeting at brother Snyder's.  A soul refreshing time!  Lodged at brother Homman's.

Thursday, 3rd.  Continued at brother Homman's.

Friday, 4th.  Rode to brother Barnet Wagoner's and tarried.

Saturday, 5th.  Preached at Mount Vernon and lodged with brother Coldsmith.

Sunday, 6th.  Preached at Mount Rock school house and in the evening in Plough's school house.  Lodged with brother Thomas.

Monday, 7th.  Spent at brother Bishop's.

Wednesday, 9th.  Thursday, 10th.  Spent at father Samuel Huber's.

Friday, 11th.  Preached at brother Lemaster's from Proverbs 5:11-12.

Saturday, 12th.  Preached at Gudtner's school house.  Lodged with brother Polmer.

10

Sunday, 13th.  Preached at the Red school house in the morning and in the evening in Marion from "And Peter followed afar off."  Lodged with brother John Myers, Sr.

Monday, 14th.  Preached with much difficulty at New Franklin.  Lodged with brother Stover.

Tuesday, 15th.  Preached at Stumptown and lodged with brother Shelly.

Wednesday, 16th.  Preached at Mount Vernon.  Had a bad cold.  Was very much under the proper percentage.  Brother Small's, very kindly, prepared me some roots, possessing medicinal properties, which relieved me much, and I enjoyed good rest during the night.

Thursday, 17th.  Preached a funeral sermon.  Sister Eliza, wife of brother John Spangler, Sr., died.  Left a husband and twelve children.  Aged 42 years, 8 months, and 11 days.  Was buried at Fetterhoff's chapel.  Text was "Get thy house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live."  Rode to Funkstown and preached in the evening.  Returned to brother Fetterhoff's (home) and tarried.

Friday, 18th.  Remained at home and rested.

Saturday, 19th.  This is my spiritual birthday.  This day two years I gave God my heart!  A short time ago! But...

Through many dangers, toils and snares,

  I have already come;

But bless God I can also say in all the fullness of soul,

'Tis grace that brought me safe thus far,

And grace shall lead me home.

My desire this day is to be entirely consecrated to the service of my heavenly Master!  O God, dedicate me to thyself!  Preached in the evening at Falling Spring.  Lodged with father Whitmore.

Sunday, 20th.  10 o'clock; preached at Fetterhoff's chapel.  Evening; preached at Shively's school house with difficulty from "Wilt thou be made whole?"  A brother had on a new coat and seemed more interested in it than in the sermon.  What a pity!

Now have our labors ended on Chambersburg Circuit for this conference year.  Of a truth we can say, all around the circuit the Lord revived his work!  Upwards of one hundred souls obtained pardon through Christ!  The appointments were well attended.  The church was engaged.  Our brethren cast their entire souls into the work!  May God protect them by power divine, "through faith, unto eternal salvation."

Monday, 21st.  Left the circuit!  Many ties, strong cords, must be torn asunder.  But separate here we must!  But I commend my dear Christian friends to God.  Heaven smile upon them!  May the Lord water the seed that was sown on this circuit the past year.  Rode to Berlin after reluctantly leaving the circuit, and spent some days under the roof of my parents, whom I love as I do my own soul.

Tuesday, 22nd.  My natural birth day.  Lord help me so to number my days as to "apply my heart unto wisdom."  While at home, many circumstances that occurred in the days of my youth revived in my mind.  But the days of my boyhood are gone!  Other things occupy their place.

Saturday, 26th.  Rode to a quarterly meeting in Littlestown, preached several times with liberty.  Spent the time pleasantly among my old friends.

March 1848

Thursday, 2nd.  Commenced our Annual Conference in this place (Littlestown, Adams County, Pennsylvania).  About or near forty preachers present.  Bishop John Russel presides, assisted by ex-bishop Jacob Erb, as chairman.  At this conference brothers Barnet Wagoner, James H. Bratten and myself were licensed to preach, and brother Andrew Marker of Baltimore was ordained to the office of an elder.  A session of five days finished our business.  Love and union was manifest.  With brother Samuel Enterline, I was placed on York Circuit.  During the continuation of Conference I was to have my home with a kind Methodist family, Jonathan Forrest, Esq.  But it being out of town and the roads bad, I spared my horse and stayed in town the greater part of the time.  After Conference I remained in Littlestown several days visiting my former friends and spent the time, at least to myself, agreeably.

Sunday, 12th.  Preached at Miller's school house.  In the evening I was to preach in Heidlersburg, but it rained.  Lodged with Mr. Staley (or Stahley).

Monday, 13th.  Rode through Petersburg (York Springs) and preached with power in Zeigler's school house.  The brethren were ashamed, as they said, to go with me to the school house, fearing that I would show an awful fist at preaching.  "O ye of little faith."  If I can't preach, God can; and he did.  At this appointment, the brother for whom I filled it told me to make no noise; I think he was afraid of the "scribes, Pharisees and hypocrites."  But I forgot it, and God did not put me in mind of it; consequently, during the sermon, some sighed, some wept aloud, some praised God aloud, and the noise was heard "afar off."  The people were heard on their way home crying and shouting!  O, if the preacher would have been there.  He erred.  I reconciled my mind on this wise,

To err is human, to forgive divine.

Tuesday, 14th.  Tarried with my parents in Berlin.

Wednesday, 15th.  Tarried with my brother Frederic in Abbottstown.

Thursday, 16th.  Passed through York to my first appointment.  May God grant us grace to do our duty, revive his work all over the circuit.  Preached in Ehrhart's paper mill.  Brother Ehrhart has fitted up a room in his mill for preaching.  This is not a church in the house, but a comfortable place in the paper mill to worship God.  Lodged at brother Ehrhart's.

Friday, 17th.  Preached and lodged with brother Jacob Seachrist's near a small town called Sodom or Dallastown.

Saturday, 18th.  Preached at brother Jacob Allison's.

Sunday, 19th.  Passed a place where there are a large number of graves.  Upon inquiry, I was told that there a number of English soldiers were kept as prisoners in the time of the Revolutionary War.  Disease getting among them, large numbers died, and are buried there.  Poor fellows, they came to fight for King George!  The king of terrors slew them, and now their bodies are moldering in American soil.  10 o'clock; I heard a Methodist preacher preach in Green's church (near Stony Brook).  Afternoon; I spoke in the same house.  In the evening I preached at Ehrhart's paper mill.

Monday, 20th.  Tarried with brother Ehrhart's.

Tuesday, 21st.  Preached at brother Heindel's.

Wednesday, 22nd.  Preached at Kocher's, a preacher.  This man is too stingy to be a good man.  He did not as much as give my horse his proper feed, and he had enough.

Tuesday, 4th.  Preached at brother Meckley's.

Wednesday, 5th.  Preached at brother Zech's.  Now I have travelled over York Circuit.  The country is hilly, the land generally barren.  The people mostly speak the German.  The brethren appear pious, devoted, kind and hospitable.  The greatest difficulty I have is the language.  Many do not understand the English, and German is to me a left-handed affair.  But I shall try to learn.  My colleague brother Enterline is a good natured and cheerful soul, a good preacher in the German language.  May the Lord sanction the efforts we make to build up the "broken down walls of Zion" and sound his omnipotent AMEN to our labors on this circuit.

Thursday, 6th.  Rode to and tarried with brother Ehrhart's.

Friday, 7th.  Brother Enterline preached at brother Allison's in the German language.  I followed by an English exhortation and returned to brother Ehrhart's.

Saturday, 8th.  Rode to York to assist brother Jacob Smith at his first quarterly meeting.  Preached three times for him with some liberty.  Brother Smith is certainly doing a work in York.  It did my soul good to assist him (who was instrumental in my conversion), to hold a meeting and call sinners to repentance.

  Blest be the day when I began,  A pilgrim first to be;

And blest forever be the man, That showed that way to me.

Tuesday, 11th.  Rode to Berlin and spent a few days with my parents.

Tuesday, 18th.  Preached at brother Seachrist's.

Wednesday, 19th.  Rained and snowed.  Snow probably 5 inches deep.  Cold and stormy.  Tarried with brother Charles Stabley.

Thursday, 20th.  Snow was entirely removed by the rays of the sun.  Preached English and exhorted German at father John Spatz's (father of Jacob Spatz, old).  This brother has ideas of his own!  A very singular man!  An expert hand at his pipe, of which I think he knows the most.

Friday, 21st.  Preached and lodged with brother Allison.

Saturday, 22nd.  Tarried with brother Ehrhart.

Friday, 5th.  Preached at brother John Wentz's to a considerable congregation.

Saturday, 6th.  Visited brother Baughman's.  A young sister lives here who told me that she had fallen into a trance.  She says she was in eternity, saw heaven, saw hell, saw her departed parents.  She exhorts the class to holiness and sinners to repentance.  She manifests a spirit of happiness continually.  She says her lamp of life will soon be blown out, but lit again eternally in heaven.  Since the day of her conversion, her life has been a life of piety.  Her conduct was, and still is, commensurate with the Gospel.  Her name is Eliza Stonesifer.  This is a mysterious affair to many, but I leave it and her to God for the better.  Rode to Littlestown and tarried with brother Levi Bishop.

Sunday, 7th.  10 o'clock; preached in Littlestown to an attentive congregation.  3 o'clock; preached 5 or 6 miles below Hanover at brother A. Diehl's.  Candle light; preached in Jefferson and lodged with brother J.G. Wagner.  To ride far!  A very warm day!  Preach three times!  Is pretty hard work, but it is for God, myself and my fellow man!

Tuesday, 23rd.  Rode to York, had my horse examined, and found a corn or bruise in his foot which lamed him.  Rode to Berlin and tarried with my parents a few days.

Wednesday, 24th.  Visited the grave yard.  Saw the graves of many with whom I was once acquainted.  The short and changing voyage of life with them is over.  Their race is run, and they are now harvesting what they had here sown.  Peculiar were my feelings whilst reading the inscriptions on their tomb stones.  Some were rich and some were poor in this life, but now they all occupy the same low place, the grave!

While I was wandering from grave to grave, my heart filled with solemn reflections.  I stooped down upon a grave to read what was upon it when, O, I was standing upon the grave of a friend who was but two days younger than myself!  Tears fill my eyes! Alas, _______, thou art gone!  Gone to thy long home!

Every hillock spake in silence as I moved over, "Thou art mortal, and must soon die."  Prepare me Lord to go!  With this reflection, I slowly left the abode of the dead.  Here are their bodies, but their spirits are in the eternal world!

The grave, dread thing!  Men shiver when thou'rt named!

Natured appalled, shakes off her wonted firmness!

Ah! how dark thy long extended realms and rueful wastes.

Where naught but silence reigns, and night, dark dismal night!

Thursday, 25th.  Spent along the banks of the Conewago and Beaver Creeks.

Friday, 26th.  Visited Mr. H., who contends that there is no real personal devil.  Took him upon "cause and effect" and he was cornered.

Sunday, 4th.  Rode to an appointment at Spring Forge.  A prejudiced class leader, or rotten hearted Methodist, closed the house, or used his influence to do so.  I then preached in brother William Kreitler's house, who be-longs to the Evangelical Association.  Evening; preached in Jefferson.  Lodged with brother _______.  During my remarks I took a few leaves out of the catechism, which insulted some of the modern stock of scribes very much.

Monday, 5th.  Remained in Jefferson.  Visited a young lady [Sally Gallatin] who was very ill. Has been confined to her couch for more than four years.  She prays much, but her hardened parents oppose her trying to save her soul, even upon her death bed!  God in mercy pity them!

Tuesday, 6th.  Preached at brother Thoman's from "A Good Soldier."  Exhorted in German.

Wednesday, 7th.  Preached at brother Zech's from the word "Eternity."  This word I can find but once in all the Bible, in the English translation.  Remarkable!

Saturday, 24th.  Rode through York to brother Hartman's and preached to a full house.  Things lean a little suspiciously here.

Sunday, 25th.  Heard brother Enterline preach a Harvest sermon in Zion church.  Enterline was reaping.  Father Kocher tried to bind [the sheaves] by exhortation.  I tried to glean, or to gather up a few heads dropped by the way, in English.  Evening; preached at John G. Streher's from "They have sown the wind, and shall reap the whirlwind."

Monday, 26th.  Spoke at brother Joseph Fishel's from Matthew 26:41.

Tuesday, 27th.  Preached at Hoffman's in the evening.  Lodged with brother Steffey.

Wednesday, 28th.  Was overtaken by a fearful thunder storm!  Turned off the road to a house. Night came on, chased day to the past.  The family with whom I stopped was very wicked.  They manifested a disposition toward me to leave.  I took the hint and started!  The storm howled and roared!  The thunder rolled heavy!  The lightning flashed glaringly!  The rain fell fast!  My road led through a dark, dreary woods!  Fearful night!  But onward I moved, blinded by the lightning, almost deafened by the thunder, wetted by the rain!  The idea rushed into my mind -- this is certainly hard!  Soon this language took possession of my soul, "Endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ."  My soul was cheered and I praised God with a loud voice amidst all the storm!  I was happy!  Reached brother S. Shue's about the time they were retiring to rest.

Monday, 3rd.  Again visited "poor Sally" [Gallatin], the afflicted young lady.  Found her no better, but worse.  Her sufferings are extreme and her mind swarming with doubts!  Have mercy dear Savior.  Tarried with brother D. Shue.

W.C. Bennet of the German Reformed church was lurking about at the far end of the congregation, among groups of big sinners, with his hat on.  A pretty place for a preacher!  Quite refined society, surely!  But the world knows its own, don't it?

August 1848

Tuesday, 1st.  Rode through Berlin and York to our first camp meeting on the circuit, at Zion church.  A precious season.  Congregations large.  Order good.  Conversions many.  Bless God!

Saturday, 12th.  Camp closed.  Rode to brother Homman's and tarried.

Sunday, 13th.  10 o'clock; heard a Dunker preach in the Red school house.  His doctrine was erroneous.  He said, "A man may be converted, become a child of God, but must put on Christ by baptism for the remission of sins."  When a man is converted, has he not put on Christ?  O, foolish man!  Dumb duck!  2 o'clock; I preached in the same house and shot at water fowls.

Monday, 14th.  Rode through Chambersburg to Greenvillage, where I overtook brothers Wagner and Colestock.  In one company we travelled through Shippensburg, etc. to brother Jacob Hershe's and tarried.

Tuesday, 15th.  We passed through Middlesex, Kingstown and Hoges-town to a camp on Shoop's station, below Shiremanstown.  A great number of preachers present.  Preached twice during the meeting.  There were but very few conversions.  Lasting and solid work I think was accomplished.  Accompanied brother Erb to his residence in Wormleysburg and dined.  Gave my horse to brother Henry Miller to ride to York, and brother Erb and myself drove down the Susquehanna River through New Cumberland, New Market and York Haven to a camp on the Dover circuit on the land of brother Hoff.  During our journey we had an interesting time, interesting at least to me.

Sunday, 20th.  Preached to probably 3 or 4,000 people at 10 o'clock.  Spoke also on Wednesday with some difficulty.  Exhorted several times during the meeting.

September 1848

Friday, 1st.  Probably 5 or 6 thousand people on the ground.  Great excitement!  The day warm!  Wind very high!  Dust flying in clouds over the encampment!  A good brother became quite frantic.  He was subject to a kind of fits.  During love feast in the morning he took a fit and ran around like wild -- scaring men, women and children!  Poor man!  When right, he is harmless and pious.  In the evening brother Wagner preached.  I followed him.  A more powerful time I think I never saw.  Weeping, sighing, crying for mercy, etc. sounded all around.  The altar was crowded with mourners!   Among them were about one dozen promising young men.  The devil appeared chained! The glory of the Lord shone all around!  The meeting was kept up all night!  The slain of the Lord were many!  To Him be all the glory.  Here at this meeting I met many unto whom I had often spoken.  My soul was filled to overflowing to meet them!  True we did not meet in heaven, but thank God we met each other on the way!  Glory!!

Saturday, 2nd.  Camp closed.  With reluctance I left my dear friends.  Whilst going I had to say

O, 'tis a sad heart searing task, From those we love to sever!

We breathe with trembling lips farewell, Farewell, perhaps, forever!

Rode to brother Levi Bishop's in Littlestown and tarried.

Sunday, 3rd.  10 o'clock; met the brethren and sisters of Littlestown in class.  Evening; preached to a large congregation with some difficulty.  Lord have pity!

Monday, 4th.  Rode through Hanover to the second camp on our circuit, on the land of brother Shue, below Jefferson.  This was a good meeting.  The wicked disturbed us some.  The people of this country are extremely ignorant.

Saturday, 9th.  Camp closed.  Took my brother and family to Abbottstown and rode to York and preached with some difficulty, and with brother Erb lodged at father Conn's.

Sunday, 10th.  10 o'clock; preached in Zion church.  Evening; preached at father Flinchbaugh's from "Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I."

Thursday, 12th.  Rode to my parents in Berlin.

Friday, 13th.  Preached in Abbottstown.  Rev. S. Gutelius of the German Reformed church was kind enough to make an appointment interfering with mine.  He had the scribes and Pharisees, I had the publicans and sinners.  Lodged with my brother Frederic.

November 1848

Wednesday, 1st.  Attended meeting held by the Albrights at "Heathcoate's Factory," or Glen Rock.  Whilst there I had to say, "O, prejudice, but thou art a sly and partial devil."

Thursday, 2nd.  Friday, 3rd.  Tarried at brother Ehrhart's.

Saturday, 4th.  Quarterly meeting commenced in Ehrhart's paper mill.  Continued one week.  Pretty good meeting -- though by proper conduct in the church it would have been better!  Sometimes when a company goes fishing there are a pack of thoughtless fellows along who jump into the water before the net is ready and scare all the fish.  This was the case at this meeting.  What a pity!

Saturday, 11th.  Rode to brother Haney's and advised the people to "flee from the wrath to come."

Sunday, 12th.  10 o'clock; preached German in Zion church.  Evening; preached at Mitzell's mill from Luke 18:10-14 by the request of brother Mitzell, a German Reformed elder.

December 1848

Monday, 4th.  Passed through Jefferson by Spring Forge to Berlin.  My poor "Tob" (horse) was very lame.  Travelled with difficulty.  Remained in Berlin some days.

Friday, 8th.  Evening; preached in Berlin for the first time.  Old, middle aged and young flocked out until the house was full and again as many around the outside.  A deathlike silence pervaded the whole assembly.  God owned his word.

Friday, 22nd.  Remained at brother Wagoner's.

Saturday, 23rd.  Visited "poor Sally" [Gallatin] again.  She is still sinking.  Commenced a protracted meeting at Long Creek meeting house.  We had a happy Christmas.  Enjoyed a glorious Christmas gift!  Good was done.  Brothers Denig, Koller and Dr. Ehrhart assisted me.  One evening whilst brother Denig was speaking, a German became happy.  He spoke out and said "Glory zu Gott, dats de man for me!"

Friday, 29th.  Spoke at father Koller's from the temptations of Christ.  During the day and night snow fell nearly two feet deep.

Saturday, 30th.  Broke the road nearly all the way to Ehrhart's paper mill.

Sunday, 31st.  Brother Henry Steffy accompanied me through York and Weigelstown to a protracted meeting in Dover, on Dover Circuit.  Lodged with the Hon. W. Picking.

January 1849

Monday, 1st.  Here I stand upon the commencement of another year!  Memory pierces through the past and many scenes come to mind.  Trials, temptations, difficulties and oppositions I have been through!  But I have also had my seasons of happiness, joy and enjoyment.  By the mercy of God I am here!  The past, with all its joys and sorrows, lies open; the future is dark and hidden.  I know not what is before me!  Let come what will, in God is my trust!  He is my shield and portion!  Should I live long or die soon, I feel encouraged to spend my days in the vineyard of my Master.

Time like the tide its motion keeps.

How soon a year rolls around!  One year nearer home.  A few more days, or years at most, and my race will end.

  The moments fly -- a minute's gone!

The minutes fly -- an hour is run!

The day is past -- the night is here!

So flies a week, a month, a year!

May God grant that if I should this year be removed from this world, that I may go safe!  Should I live, O, may I be useful to my Master.  Preached in Dover from "I will overturn, overturn, overturn it, and it shall be until he come, whose right it is, and I will give it him."

            Tuesday, 2nd.  Preached again.

Wednesday, 3rd.  Preached from "Two men went up into the temple to pray."  Dover is evidently a wicked place.  People hardened.

Thursday, 4th.  Brother Henry Steffy rode with me through York to brother Stein's, where he exhorted the people to repent.  Poor meeting!

Friday, 5th.  Rode to brother John Seachrist's and tarried.

Saturday, 6th.  Brother Steffy left me.  Could not reach my appointment on account of snow drifts.  Lodged with brother Henry Stabley.

Sunday, 7th.  Preached at Zion church from "And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt."  Evening; preached at Ehrhart's paper mill from "The great trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish."  Spoke with much difficulty.

Saturday, 13th.  Commenced a protracted meeting at brother John Wentz's.  Preached during their meeting 5 times and exhorted several times.  Six or eight conversions.  A very interesting meeting.  Conduct of the people good.  Bless God!

Saturday, 20th.  Quarterly meeting commenced in Jefferson.  An Achan in the camp.  Meeting cold and dry until the troubler was stoned.  Then the work commenced!  Six conversions!  This Achan was Christian Brennaman, whom I have heretofore noticed as an inconsistent man.  We were necessitated to expel him.

Monday, 29th.  Rode to brother Ehrhart's and tarried.

Tuesday, 30th.  Saw a funeral procession in York -- father, mother and son all buried at the same time!  O, death, thou cruel monster!  Rode to brother Allison's and preached my farewell from "I have done as thou hast commanded me."

Wednesday, 31st.  This day I met a very uncouth fellow, who called me a liar when I had spoken the truth.  Truth I will speak if the devil and Eli Kindig go mad!  Preached German at brother John Spatz's.

February 1849

Thursday, 1st.  This day I met a drunken man with a gun, who asked in a vulgar manner to get behind me on the horse.  He then ran after me with his gun as if to shoot.  I rode fast and soon was out of his sight.  Preached German to a few persons at brother John Gabel's.

Friday, 2nd.  Baptized a child named John Wesley Buckingham and preached at Mitzell's mill.  Brother Grimm followed me with a German exhortation.

Monday, 5th.  Tuesday, 6th.  Tarried at brother Ehrhart's.

Wednesday, 7th.  With a sad heart I bid farewell to the kind, pious family -- and in fact the entire household.  Here I had a home.  Preached at Sodom in brother Neff's house from Revelation 6:17.  O, Lord, don't let this Sodom sink, though the wickedness is great.  Turn the hearts of the people!

Thursday, 8th.  Brother Haney preached for me at father Flinchbaugh's.  Followed him with a short farewell to the people.

Friday, 9th.  Met brother Enterline, and both spoke from the same text -- he in German, I in English -- at Mr. J.G. Streher's.

25

Saturday, 10th.  Visited brother Samuel Seitz, a Methodist, near Shrewsbury and preached at brother Peter Koller's.

Sunday, 11th.  10 o'clock; preached my farewell at brother Koller's.  Here I formed a class during the past year.  God protect it.  Evening; spoke at Long Creek meeting house.  Many melted to tears.  Lodged with brother S. Shue.

Monday, 12th.  Preached in P.B. Hoffman's paper mill.  Here the people desire to serve God, but have hard getting along, for want of the means.  Methodist preachers are not now as they once were.  Here they neglect their people; not only here, but at numbers of other places.

Tuesday, 13th.  Preached German at brother Joseph Fishel's from II Corinthians 13:13.  A solemn, serious and impressive time.

Wednesday, 14th.  With tears I bid farewell to the church in this neighborhood.  O, how unwilling we are to leave friends we love!  Preached to a few people at Swartzbaugh's paper mill.

Thursday, 15th.  Very cold.  Had preaching at brother John Wentz's.

Friday, 16th.  Preached at brother Jones'.

Sunday, 18th.  Still extremely cold.  2 o'clock; preached at Spring Forge.  Evening; preached in Jefferson.  Large congregation.  Lodged with brother Wagner.

Monday, 19th.  This day three years ago I embraced religion. O, how short the time appears.  I have endeavored to do my duty.  But O, how very little I have done!  True, I have travelled much, spoken often, but I might have done more.  Lord, in mercy pardon me!  Through grace I am what I am.  My motto is yet "Onward and upward!"

Through floods and flames if Jesus leads,

  I'll follow where he goes!

Preached in the evening in German at brother Thoman's.

Tuesday, 20th.  Preached German at brother Meckley's from the last verse in the Bible.

Wednesday, 21st.  Preached German at brother Zech's from "Continue in prayer."  Good meeting.

Thursday, 22nd.  Left York Circuit.  Thus ended my labors on this circuit.  Left the circuit praying.  My heart was heavy!  The Lord be with the church on this circuit.  Send them preachers that have hot hearts and clean hands.  About one hundred embraced the Savior, and forty odd were added to the church.  This was a blustering, cold and snowy day!  My frame was chilled but, bless God, my heart was warm!  The lot of the itinerant preacher, upon the one hand, is hard!  To leave home and friends, expose himself to all kinds of weather, with his Bible as his only weapon to meet every assault.  But God, his Son, his Spirit and his word are sufficient to conquer the devil, the world and the flesh!  Who can stand against these?  I am reconciled to my lot!

This, also, is my natural birthday.  The most of my days were spent to injury of my soul, whilst but few were spent to its benefit!  What a pity!  May God assist me to redeem the past by improving the future.  Reached Berlin about 2 o'clock and tarried with my parents.

Friday, 23rd.  Left home.  Met Dr. Henry Ehrhart in Abbottstown and seated ourselves in a buggy, drove to father John Miller's and tarried.

26

Saturday, 24th.  Reached brother J.M. Bishop's about four miles from Chambersburg, where we were to assist in holding a big meeting.  This proved to be a disappointment.  Some bad fellows used their influence to prevent us holding the meeting in the school house.  Bad-hearted people.

Sunday, 25th.  Monday, 26th.  Tuesday, 27th.  Visited through the neighborhood.

Wednesday, 28th.  Reached Conference.  Convened in Mower's church, near Newburg.  A pleasant session.  God was among us.  Brotherly love was a full member of this conference.  There was one wire of discord touched, but the sound was soon absorbed by good feeling.  Had my home in company of Dr. Ehrhart and brother Cormany at brother Shoemaker's -- a kind, affectionate and pious family belonging to the church of God.

March 1849

Monday, 5th.  Conference closed.  Brothers Wagner, Owen, Colestock, Bratten, Dr. Ehrhart and myself tarried with brother Joseph Mower.

Thursday, 8th.  Reached Berlin and remained several days.  Heard Rev. S. Gutelius preach twice.  One sermon was good, the other was seasoned quite strong with John Calvin.

Sunday, 25th.  Spoke in the church at prayer meeting from I John 1:8,9.

Monday, 26th.  Preached with liberty to a large congregation in Abbottstown.  Gave the Catholics a shot.

Tuesday, 27th.  Rode to Hanover and tarried with uncle Lohr.

Wednesday, 28th.  Rode to Littlestown and tarried with brother I. Berlin.

Thursday, 29th.  Heard brother Showman preach; closed meeting for him.  In this place (Littlestown) exist some peculiar difficulties in the church.  Brother Showman certainly pursues a wrong way to adjust them.  When with one party, he sides with it; and when with the other, he sides with them.  This is leaning both ways!  Carrying water on both shoulders!  This I saw.  What a pity that men filling the sacred desk have no better knowledge of things.  I fear by and by he will spill all his water and fall down between both parties in contempt.  Have mercy, Lord!

Friday, 30th.  Started for Chambersburg Circuit.  Passed through Gettysburg, etc.  When within a few miles of Chambersburg, I overtook a young lady who informed me that I was passed my appointment.  Consequently I rode to brother Shull's, according to the information received, and preached to an attentive congregation from "Watch and pray."

Saturday, 31st.  Rode to brother Daniel Homman's (where I have my home for this conference year) and tarried.

April 1849

Sunday, 1st.  10 o'clock; preached to a very large congregation in the Red school house.  Evening; preached to a full house in Marion.  Lodged with brother Hawbaker.

27

Wednesday, 4th.  Preached in Mt. Zion church.  Lodged with brother Fry.

Thursday, 5th.  Spoke in Funkstown.  The people were very late in coming out; consequently, I preached a short sermon.  Lodged with father Henry Small.

Friday, 6th.  Heard Rev. Mr. Thrush preach a pretty good sermon.  Rode with brother Fetterhoff to his house and tarried.  Saturday, 7th.  Preached at Falling Spring.  Lodged with father Witmore.

Sunday, 8th.  Easter.  Preached in Fetterhoff's chapel at 10 o'clock.  Evening; preached at Shively's school house.  Lodged with brother Shively.

Monday, 9th.  Met brother Wagner.  Rode to Chambersburg.  Attended a book auction. The "Apprentice's Library" was sold out.  Novel reading, I was told, broke it up!  O, when shall the evil stream of novel reading cease to flow?  Bought a few books and rode home to brother Homman's and tarried.

Tuesday, 10th.  Wednesday, 11th.  Thursday, 12th.  Heard Rev. E. Welty, a Methodist, preach in the Red school house.  He seemed rather dry and selfish!

Friday, 13th.  Rode to Lemaster's and heard brother Wagner preach.  Closed meeting with exhortation and prayer.

Saturday, 14th.  Very cold!  Snow storms!  Rode to brother Mower's and tarried.

Sunday, 15th.  Last evening the mountains were on fire.  I looked a long while, from my chamber window, upon its ravages.  The storm was strong, scattering the flames in all directions.  Dreary!  Awful!!  Terrifying!!!  Fire is a good servant, but a pitiless master.  Preached at 10 o'clock in Southampton church.  2½ o'clock; preached at Stony Point.  Evening; preached at Mt. Vernon.  This day was blustery and snowy!  Lodged with brother Coldsmith.

Monday, 16th.  Rode home to brother Homman's and tarried during the week.

Thursday, 19th.  Attended a good class meeting at brother Tobias Crider's.

Saturday, 21st.  Rode to brother Bixler's and tarried.

Sunday, 22nd.  Preached in Mt. Rock school house.  Rode to brother Bishop's and tarried.

Monday, 23rd.  Rode home to brother Homman's and tarried several days.  Now I have travelled around my circuit.  Many things were familiar, but many changes have taken place.  Some have died!  Some have moved away!  Some have backslidden!  Others are yet happy on their way to heaven.  I met with a kind reception.  Hands, hearts and houses opened.  There is a great contrast between Franklin and York counties.  Franklin is level and fertile.  York is hilly and barren.  Not only a contrast in land, but in people.  In York County they are mostly of little information, and many ill-bred and vulgar.  In Franklin, generally well-read and sociable.  Our circuit lies between the North and South mountains in "Cumberland Valley," a fertile, limestone country.  My colleague, brother William Wagner, is a

kind, open-hearted man.  He preaches a good, sound, doctrinal sermon.  May God bless preachers and people this year.  May he revive his work all around the circuit.

Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most Mighty, with thy glory and thy majesty.  And in thy majesty ride prosperously, because of truth and meekness and righteousness.

O, may we have a conference year of power! of grace! of glory!  O, God help us to preach and the people to hear!  Convict!  Convert!  Revive!  Thy name shall have all the glory.  Drive the devil from his strong holds!  Destroy the empire of sin!  Chase away dull formality!  Tear down pride!  Overturn idolatry!  Overthrow covetousness!  Bring down "spiritual wickedness in high places."  Close the mouths of gainsayers!  Trouble the wicked!  Arouse the careless!  Shake the sleeper!  Warm the lukewarm!  Make the crescent to wane and be buried in the oblivion before the power of the cross.

Tuesday, 24th.  Wednesday, 25th.  Thursday, 26th.  Remained at home (at brother Homman's).  Heard the Rev. Mr. Thrush preach in the Red school house.  He seems to be a man sent of God.  Sociable and charitable.  God bless him.

Friday, 27th.  Rode to brother Shull's where I met brothers Wagner and Colestock.  Both refused to preach; consequently, I spoke.  Labored with some difficulty.

Saturday, 28th.  Our quarterly meeting commenced at the Red school house.  The meeting was good.  Three professed to have found pardon.  The church was much revived.

May 1849

            Monday, 7th.  Remained at home.

Tuesday, 8th.  Passed through Chambersburg; was overtaken by a heavy rain.  Tarried with brother Wagner.

Wednesday, 9th.  Met brother Dickson.  Preached in the Lutheran church in Greenvillage.  Lodged with brother Flud.

Thursday, 10th.  In company of brother Dickson, rode to Springfield and tarried with brother Brandt.

Friday, 11th.  Heard Rev. Mr. Etchison, a Methodist, preach in Springfield.  Lodged with brother Keller.

Saturday, 12th.  Passed through Carlisle to Hershe's church to quarterly meeting on Hershe's Station.  2 o'clock; preached German from Psalm 116:12, after which we had quarterly conference.  Acted as presiding elder pro temp.  Evening; preached again.  Lodged with brother Neidig.

Sunday, 13th.  10 o'clock; I preached German, followed by brother Dickson in English, after which we distributed "bread and wine" in remembrance of the "sufferings and death of our Savior."  Evening; I preached again to many people.  Lodged with brother Hershe.

Monday, 14th.  Brother Colestock preached.  Quite an interesting meeting.  Attended "German Reformed Classis" at the Carlisle Springs.  O, what an (what shall I say?) awful dead body of preachers.  Formality!  Formality!!  Formality!!!  Here I saw men who knew me very well, when at my father's table and under his roof(!), but they passed me by!  O, prejudice!  Thou dark-hearted devil!  Mercy, Lord!  Mercy!!

29

Tuesday, 15th.  Rode with Colestock through Mechanicsburg and Shiremanstown, left brother Colestock and rode to brother Samuel Shoop's and tarried.

Wednesday, 16th.  Rode to the Susquehanna River, left my horse at a public house, walked across the bridge to Harrisburg -- where I expected to meet a friend, but was disappointed.  Returned to where my horse was left, and there I certainly met a friend -- brother Isaac Berlin.  We went to brother Shoop's and dined.  Left with cousin Isaac and met brother Owen, who earnestly requested me to accompany him to his appointment; consequently, I did so.  Passed through Wormleysburg and Fairview to brother Booser's.  Brother Owen preached; I closed the meeting for him.

Thursday, 17th.  Returned to brother Shoop's; met Colestock.  Passed through Mechanicsburg, Carlisle and Newville to brother Brandt's and preached in Springfield.  Here is the largest spring I ever saw.

Thursday, 24th.  This morning the enemy has again made an attack.  I am 20 minutes 'till 10 o'clock in the midst of a severe battle!  O, Lord, help me!  The Lord did help me, certainly!  Thanks to his name.  Preached in Funkstown.  Here the devil mustered out his men, with the drum and fife, which disturbed our meeting some.  Funkstown is evidently a very wicked place.

Friday, 25th.  Preached to a house full of people, with some difficulty, from "Bartimaeus" at brother Shull's.

Saturday, 26th.  Commenced a protracted meeting.  I had no ministerial help.  Preached from "Thou art weighed in the balances and found wanting."  Lodged with father Myers.

Sunday, 27th.  10 o'clock; preached German from Psalm 116:12, then English from I Thessalonians 5:19.  Candle light; preached from "The burning bush."  Lodged with brother Jacob Bender.

June 1849

Saturday, 2nd.  Commenced a protracted meeting at Fetterhoff's chapel.  A drowsy congregation.  Gave church sleepers a pretty hard knock.

Sunday, 3rd.  10 o'clock; a very large congregation.  Gave the dry morsel folks a pretty hard blow, which made some a little salty!  Evening; preached at Shively's school house with liberty.  Lodged with brother Solomon Shively.

Monday, 4th.  Returned to the Fetterhoff's chapel and preached at candle light with liberty.

            Tuesday, 5th.  Brother Wagner preached.

Monday, 11th.  Brother Colestock preached a short sermon, after which we had a refreshing love feast.  Evening; I spoke with some difficulty from "The demoniac."

Tuesday, 12th.  Rode to Shippensburg, in company of brother Colestock, to the laying of a corner stone at the German Reformed church.  This (if I can judge) was a poor affair.  Poor as poverty!  Two things were delivered by a Mr. Gehrhart and Mr. Craumer (the former English and the latter German) to be called sermons.  Both cold and bleak as Norway!  One, poor fellow, read!  Paul said, "We preach," not, "We read."  Men go to college 5,6 or even 7 years, then run into the priest's office for a morsel -- reading prayers and sermons.  Great God, what a shame!!  The Lord deliver our land from the hands of such filthy lucre men!  Men usurping authority, being made clerical coxcombs, strutting about in God's vineyard, lording it over God's heritage, should be looked down upon as contemptuous inferiority and exposed to public gaze!  Returned to Southampton church.  Brother Colestock preached and I followed with an exhortation.  A good meeting.  The power of God was among us!

Wednesday, 13th.  Rode with brother Colestock to Springfield, attended a dead prayer meeting at brother Bower's and lodged with brother Keller.

Thursday, 14th.  We tarried with brother Brandt.

Friday, 15th.  We rode to brother Tritt's (a German Reformed).  Brother Colestock preached; I closed the meeting for him.

Saturday, 16th.  I am to assist brother Colestock to hold a protracted meeting in Mower's church, near Newburg.  Brother Colestock was called back to Springfield to preach a funeral sermon.  I rode to the place of appointment for the meeting and preached from "The universal offer of salvation." Took off Calvin's jacket.  Lodged with brother Joseph Mower.

Sunday, 17th.  10 o'clock; I preached to a large congregation of people.  Exposed the folly of indecision in religion.  Struck some professors of religion pretty hard!  They felt the blow, gave a murmur and were left to make the best of it!  3 o'clock; brother T. Crider preached German.  Evening; brother Colestock preached and I followed him with an exhortation.

Monday, 18th.  Spent in visiting.  Candle light; spoke to a large congregation, followed by brother Dickson.  Lodged with father Rebok.

Tuesday, 19th.  Visited some more families, among them brother Shoemaker's, where I had my home during our last Annual Conference.  Was glad to see them.  This certainly is a precious family.  Evening; brother Colestock preached and I followed him with an exhortation.  Told the people of the miseries of hell, the horrors of the damned and the terrors of the law.  This evening closed the meeting. Much indifference manifested among professing Christians.  God in mercy warm their hearts.  Lodged with father Mowry.

Wednesday, 20th.  We rode to brother Baughman's.  Walked up the mountain; had a beautiful view of the Cumberland valley.  How mighty! how majestic! how mysterious! are the works of nature!  Tarried with brother Baughman.

Thursday, 21st.  Passed through Roxbury to brother Samuel Huber's.  Here brother Bonewell had an appointment.  He did not come; consequently, I filled it.  Spoke with liberty.  May be this was a providential matter.

Friday, 22nd.  For some time past, my mind has not been calm.  I have been peculiarly uneasy!  A heavy weight was pressing me, at times almost to the earth!  Trouble was to all appearance before me!  Fearful forebodings!  Painful apprehensions!  I felt unhappy and dreary!  Gloom surrounded my heart!  A thick black cloud was suspended over me!  Today the thunder commenced to mutter!  The lightning flashed vividly!  And an awful storm came from Adams County, in the shape of a well-written letter, from an honest friend, informing me of some peculiar opposition strangely arising or having arisen there!  It caused me to shed tears!  My heart sank within me!  O, could I lie low upon the ground and weep!

I felt as one urged on to break,

The strongest tie that bound him!

To light, to life, to cherished joy!

To all things dear around him!

Here was a revelation of things pressing so heavily upon my mind.  The matter is plain, which the writer of the letter explains to me upon philosophical principles!  For three long years I have prayed for wisdom upon a certain point, asking the Lord to open or close my way!  I believe the Lord has heard me and is now about to answer!  Faith I have that the answer will be a right one.  God decide for my good!  May there be --

    A calm, after a storm!

With a confused mind I preached at brother Shull's from Psalm 61:20.  "When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the Rock that is higher than I."

Saturday, 23rd.  Rode home to brother Homman's and tarried.

Sunday, 24th.  10 o'clock; preached with liberty to a large and attentive congregation at the Red school house.  Shot pretty hard.  And hit the mark!  Candle

light; rain -- held prayer meeting in Marion.  Lodged with brother Henry Hawbaker.

Monday, 25th.  Preached at New Franklin with grace.  Lodged with brother Stover.

Tuesday, 26th.  Feel the importance of my calling. O, how the value of souls is resting upon my mind!  O, Lord make me able, by thy grace, to bear the responsibility resting upon me!  My soul is drawn out after God and His cause!  O, that I were more humble!  more holy! more useful to my Divine Master!  I feel the necessity of holiness of heart, of life, and of all manner of conversation!  O, Lord, still give me more grace.  My poor heart, I feel, is cleaving to my Savior!  A firm determination I have to press forward!

Through duty and through trials, too,

  I'll go at his command!

To Glory I desire to get!  Heaven I wish to be my home!  I want to get there honestly -- through Christ the door!  God help poor unworthy me.  Preached at the Union school house with grace.  Lodged with brother Shelly.

Wednesday, 27th.  Preached with some difficulty at Mount Zion church.  Here the devil seems to have a strong hold!  Lodged with brother Fry.

Thursday, 28th.  This day I received a letter from Adams County containing matter somewhat different from the one I received last Friday.  The contents encouraged me some.  Things are turning right side up.  Held class meeting at brother Homman's.  A solemn time.

Friday, 29th.  Visited and tarried with brother Tobias Crider.

Saturday, 30th.  Preached with liberty at Falling Spring from "Tekel, thou art weighed in the balances and found wanting."  Gave standing weight.  The word spoken had effect.  During this day I had cheering times.  My soul feasted much upon the love of God!  Lodged with father Whitmore.

Monday, 2nd.  Preached in Fayetteville.  Lodged with father Flickinger.  If miserism makes a pious man, then this is a very good man -- because he has a large development of this principle, so prominent that it can be seen without straining one's vision.

Tuesday, 3rd.  I rode home and worked some in harvest during the week.  To work is good.

Sunday, 29th.  This morning mother Keller was very ill.  I approached her bed side and asked her the state of her mind.  She said, "O, I feel that Jesus is with me!"  She was apparently happy.  What a comfort to have Jesus with us in health, but certainly a greater joy to have him with us when we are afflicted.  10 o'clock; preached at Fetterhoff's chapel.  Evening; preached with some difficulty at Shively's school house.  Here there are a number of bad boys that always disturb our meetings.  What a shame that parents don't raise their children better.

Saturday, 11th. Rode home to brother Homman's and heard the most rotten sermon (If I may call it a sermon at all) I ever heard. Blasphemy!! It was delivered by Augustus C. Nedikind, a Lutheran. If his name were as odious as his talk, it would be a pollution on this page and an outrage in my journal. To him I am to reply on Sunday the 16th of September. His text was in the 5th chapter of Matthew, verse 48. The same text I am to take for my defense and the defense of the doctrine of my church. More of this hereafter.

He knew that his doctrine was foundless and false! If he did not, he must be most fearfully ignorant! He came here to give the United Brethren a flogging, but his own cudgel was taken from him and he "dressed off in his own" to the satisfaction of all sensible persons present. I spoke for two hours and twenty-eight minutes. His remarks and my reply will be found among some of my other writings. 3 o'clock; father Wingert preached for me in Marion. Candle light;

Dark are the clouds along the sky,

Their gloom is in my heart!

O may the rays of Divine light emanate from the peerless throne of the King Eternal and break in upon my poor soul! The God of Jacob with his strong hand lead me through this trying life! How unhappy we are when separated from those whose spirits are kindred to ours. Lord pity us, pity us! Preached at brother Shull's from "God is not mocked."

I think as long as I preach in this place, I shall punish this old man to keep me and my horse. I could go elsewhere, but he must know that I am not afraid to teach him that it is his duty to be hospitable. The lord enlarge his narrow heart!  Don't it look disgusting to see a woman sucking on a roll of nasty, filthy, stinking tobacco called a cigar?

January 1850

Tuesday, 1st. Another year gone! Gone forever!! I am yet here. Why the Lord spared me is best known to himself. This past has been a year of changes, of separations, of disappointments! The coming will be as the past.  I know that changes are before me. Separations await me, and disappointments may meet me! The Lord undertake for me! Deaf with me as seemeth good unto thee, but deal with me mercifully! I am in the hands, O God, and will to be nothing that thou mayest be all. Tuesday, 22nd. To me a day of prayer and reflection. The hour of importance is at hand. About 7 o'clock this evening I was married to Catherine A. Weidman, daughter of John and Mary B. Weidman of Littlestown, Adams County, Penna. A civil and sociable company of old, well-tried friends were present. Brother William Wagner performed the ceremony.  Brother James H. Bratten and Miss Elizabeth Dysert waited on us. All passed in a Christian manner. Nothing light, nothing trifling, no confusion. Thank God for the well behaved and serious conduct of those present. One remark brother Wagner made fastened upon my mind never to be forgotten; it was this, "There are two important periods in a man's life – the first is when he is united in Holy Matrimony, the second is when we are again separated."  This struck me forcibly!

Wednesday, 23rd. This day finds me as no other ever found me – a married man. I feel not trifling, nor gay, but serious and solemn. My heart is lifted to heaven, imploring the blessing of heaven upon me and mine. After an acquaintance of more than four years, the matter resulted in marriage.  During the greater part of this time I was engaged in prayer for the Lord to open or close our way. During the four years I visited no other female, because I never could perceive any prudence nor consistency in any young man paying attention to more than one young female at one time. It was a course offensive to me. During these four years the conduct of my Kitty (as I shall call her) was prudent, reserved, consistent and pious. I endeavored to fathom her character, conversion and life – and must say from my heart, impartially, it was commensurate with the Gospel and Christianity. And I must here say that I never was happy (as regards the world) for 30 minutes out of her company since I knew her. A one I never loved as I did and do her! I married Kitty because I loved her, and believed fully that the Lord desired it. I am

42

convinced that the Lord brought us together. O, that he now may enable us to love and serve him, to continue to love each other, and to walk blameless in all the commandments of God.

Help us to help each other lord

     Each other's cross to bear.

Travelled in sweet conversation to Berlin and tarried with my parents.

Thursday, 24th. With my Kitty, passed through Abbottstown to York, where our Conference meets today. On our arrival the forenoon session was over. Afternoon session continued the examination of preachers. Evening heard brother Colestock preach in the Methodist lecture room, followed by brother Bratten. A dry meeting. Lodged with Henry Ickes, a cousin of mine, where our home is to be during the sessions of conference.

Friday, 25th. 8 o'clock; examination of preachers continued. Oliver, Norcross, Rankin and Greenblade applied for licenses to preach. All rejected!  1 o'clock; applications for ordination, preachers' salaries (mostly deficient), election for presiding elder. Appeared before the committee to examine persons for ordination.

Saturday, 26th. Forenoon session; William Wagner elected presiding elder. Afternoon; Bishop Erb preached German and George Miller preached, after which John Dickson and W.B. Raber were ordained by the laying on of hands. Bishop Erb assisted by George Miller and William Wagner attended to the ordination services. A solemn and impressive occasion. Many melted to tears. In the evening I preached to a very large congregation with liberty.

Sunday, 27th. 10 o'clock; heard brother Fohl preach in the English Lutheran church. This day our preachers filled nearly all the pulpits in York.  This looked a little like Christianity.

Monday, 28th. Appointments read out; had some controversy concerning Greencastle appointment. Afternoon; a letter from Allegheny Conference was read requesting a cooperation of this conference in their institution of learning, which we declined or refused doing. Evening session; the case of Philadelphia was opened before the conference – (1) to pay the church, and (2) to pay the preacher. In the first case, Bishop Erb was elected travelling agent to collect money to pay the church in Philadelphia. Brother J.S. Kessler was last year sent to Philadelphia as a missionary; consequently, he came to conference for his salary out of the missionary treasury – and the funds were all gone. Now, how must brother get his salary? Why, this conference passed a resolution that each circuit and station raise $6.10 for brother Kessler's salary, a thing never known of in any case before! If our missionaries were deficient heretofore, conference made them wait until the missionary collections were thrown into the treasury. But this appeared to be an extra case! Consequently conference must make fish of one and meat of the other to gain the salary of brother Kessler by this strange effort. I go in for all fish or all meat! I refuse to collect $6.10 and shall carry out my refusal! I will endeavor to collect all the missionary money I can, but will certainly refuse to carry out any bad ecclesiastical law or resolutions at the risk of all that is near to me in the church! If heaven and God help me, I'll “do justly!"

Tuesday, 29th. Conference closed. Travelled to Abbottstown and lodged with cousin Isaac Berlin.

At places my Kitty and myself had to walk down hill. I had no locking machine to my buggy; consequently, I adopted the novel plan of locking by running a rail through the spokes of the hind wheels! With difficult travelling through a thinly inhabited country, we reached Orbisonia and passed on through Shirleysburg to a family belonging to the Brethren church by the name of Bowman, who had hospitality enough not to entertain us. It was already getting dark, no tavern along the road. I should not have enquired at a private house again, but on we travelled a mile or two more and enquired for lodging. The answer was a cheerful, "O, yes!"  In we went and soon found that we were with a pious family of United Brethren; consequently, we felt at home.

January 1851

Wednesday, 1st. Another year gone! Gone forever. Joys and sorrows are gone with it. The enjoyment of the past year overbalances by far the sorrow I had. 'Tis true I have had my perplexities, but I have not been in despair. The Lord has been with me. Although I have done many things I should not have done, and left many things unaccomplished, and have been of but very little use to my Master, yet he has been merciful unto me. O, that I had been more faithful! I must say that my Kitty lives more consistent than I do! O, may heaven help us both to do our duty. We are attached to each other, and O, may our hearts be united in God. The Lord bless my Kitty, little Sarah Catherine (for so we name our little girl), and my poor unworthy self. The God of heaven be with us and prepare our hearts for whatever may be before us in the coming year. Make us thine entirely! May we live together, as Kitty says, "happy and peaceable as little children." Help us, Lord, to do the work that thou hast given us. Tuesday, 4th. 9 o'clock; conference commenced. Preachers examined.

Wednesday, 5th. This day I stood against the whole conference in regards to the $6.10 resolution passed last conference, concerning brother  Kessler's salary as missionary in Philadelphia. And if brother George Miller, who has gotten a little big in Baltimore, and a few more could have done it, I suppose I would have been crushed without a comment! As it was, I received a few severe scratches from several vultures' claws – but the wounds are not considered mortal by the Physician of Souls. I made several speeches – one of them pretty full of sarcasm, which the occasion demanded. And as I hinted last year on January 28th of my journal, I still say at the risk of everything that I won't carry out bad ecclesiastical law. Let brother Kessler get his support as do our other missionaries, he is no

better than they are. I feel assured that I am in the right. Many in the conference were of my opinion, but they having voted for the $6.10 resolution consequently felt it a duty to collect said amount. I opposed the resolution and consequently refused to collect the $6.10. It was not for the amount of money to be collected, but on account of the partiality and injustice of the affair.

the name of Gutwolt (who has venom enough to be a serpent).  I would not make these remarks were I not convinced that I am right, in judging from things combined.  The fact is lawyers and other common sinners manifest more Christian principle than most Methodists in this place.  Well they may have their old church to themselves, although other people helped to build it.  I shall try, as I told them (the Methodists), I would put the Sabeans upon them.

Glad to enjoy the society of my little family again.  Poor itinerant, must leave all that is dear to him in this life, go and preach his Master's Gospel, and O how little the people appreciate his labors!

Consequently I gathered up my poor Kitty and the babe and started, in much anxiety, and reached brother Spahr's and tarried.

Friday, 21st.  Last night my dear Kitty was much distressed!  The Lord bless her.  Reached Littlestown late at night and found Kitty's mother still alive, the fever broken, and good prospects that she will soon recover.  But this was a dreary day for Kitty!  Although she could say, "My Master's will be done!"

Wednesday, 26th.  I think the brother with whom we tarried last night is not where the Lord wishes him to be.  He finds fault with everybody.  The Lord set him up straight.  Drove to Churchtown and dined.  Hard travelling.  Snow pretty deep, and falls many.  Passed through Middlesex.  When going up the

mountain my pony fagged.  Kitty and myself tried to walk.  O, how difficult!  When we got about half way up the mountain, Kitty, dear soul, could walk no more!  There we stood!  What to do we knew not!  The horse could scarcely pull the carriage when empty!  "What can be done?," thought I.  Well, the Lord helped.  A man came down the mountain in a sleigh, who by my request took my dear Kitty and little Sarah to the top of the mountain.  I led my pony up, and in the evening we reached Rev. H. Young's and tarried.

Thursday, 27th.  Learned that our Presiding Elder [Jacob Smith] was not in Petersburg at the quarterly and dedication meeting on account of the bad roads.  I am glad and grateful that I am home with my little family.

Sunday, 9th.  10 o'clock; preached at Snyder's church.  Complaint made against a member of this class.  It is an astonishing affair that professors of religion can't live as they should.  If ever I met a mean family, guilty of the grossest equivocation and prevarication, it is [name crossed out] family.  He with his children have had and caused disturbance in the Christian community, where they reside, for years together.  My prediction that there is something wrong in this class is coming true.  The matter is clearly manifest.  The fact is, I have felt during preaching at this place, from time to time, like a man in a jug with only his head out.  I had no room, no liberty!  The Lord set things right.  Afternoon; preached German in the Centre school house from Revelation 6:8.  Also attended the organization of a Sabbath school.  Evening; preached in Petersburg from Malachi 4, part of verse 2.

Monday, 10th.  Preached in Wilson's school house.  Lodged with Mr. Wilson.  This man told me he never prayed.  Great God!  A man with a large family, some children grown up, and never prayed!  Is it possible?  Heaven pity him!

Saturday, 15th.  Had a trial of bad members.  O, what falsehoods proven upon Hester and Sarah [name crossed out]!  The one made acknowledgments and confession, the other to be expelled.  The truth is, the whole family is not fit to belong to the church, save the mother and small children!  Preached in Reiber's school house in the evening and lodged with brother McClintic.

Sunday, 16th.  Forenoon; preached in Young's church to a large congregation.  Afternoon; preached German.  Evening; spoke to a house full of people at brother Elliott's.

June 1852

Tuesday, 1st.  Returned home and remained at home this week.  Some bad people abused us much this week!  I shall never forget the [name crossed out] crew for their servility.  I can cheerfully pardon them and submit myself and family to God and say. "they that will live Godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution."  The most perplexing idea to me is that people hide their deformed faces under the garb of Christianity!  I am glad to know that the Sutches are known in Bloomfield.  Their standing in society is low.  Respect-able people shun them.  Well if they abuse us, we shall love them and try to do them all the good we can.  But the fact is, if people profess such sanctity as the Winebrenarians do, they ought to live right.

Saturday, 24th.  Preached at Juniata furnace and returned home quickly.

Sunday, 25th.  My poor Kitty said, "Billy, fill your appointments.  The Lord will take care of me and bless you."  O, how resigned to the will of God she is.  Forenoon; preached in Snyder's church. Afternoon; preached in the Presbyterian church on Middle ridge.  Evening; preached in Mogel's school house and returned home as soon as possible.

Monday, 26th through Thursday, 29th.  Kitty dear soul still getting worse.  O, my poor heart sinks at the idea of my precious one to be taken from me!  O, Lord deal mercifully.  O, deal mercifully and graciously.

Saturday, 31st.  During last night my Kitty was very happy in her God.  O, the many cheering expressions she made.  Today she seems a little better and is much comforted in her Savior.  It may be that she will not be my Kitty much longer.  O, that I could suffer in her place!  How gladly I would bear all her pains!  How cheerfully I would die in her stead!  But thou, O God, knowest best!

Monday, 2nd.  Kitty, poor soul, no better.  She now has piles, diarrhea, milk leg, and very bad cough.  Had Dr. Ritter to consult with Dr. Ickes concerning her case.  They seem to have hopes of her recovery.  O, that she might recover.  But God knows best.  Our poor little Willie (William Otterbein, for so we call out little boy) is also very sick.  O, God move thy hand gently for my distress is great.

Tuesday, 3rd.  Kitty and Willie both worse!

Thursday, 5th.  Dr. Ritter came again.

EDITOR'S EPILOGUE

The following brief announcements in the Perry County Democrat for Thursday, August 19, 1852, confirm the above suspicion.

** Died Saturday last [8/14/1852] in Bloomfield, Mrs. Catherine A. Raber, aged 26-1-19.

** Died Sunday last [8/15/1852] last an infant son of Rev. William B. and           Catherine A. Raber.

While the conference journals continue to chronicle the ecclesiastical career of William Raber, his remaining personal life has been much more difficult to reconstruct.  A search of cemetery and other records in Perry and Adams counties has failed to locate the graves of his wife Catherine (6/26/1826-8/14/1852) or son William (7/8/1852-8/15/1852).  Nor has the fate of daughter Sarah Catherine (b. 10/24/1850), less than two years old when her mother died, been determined with certainty.

Raber later married Miss Susan Hoff of York and to this union was born Mary Ellen (4/2/1863-7/16/1863).  Rev. Raber died 2/11/1875 while serving First UB in York, and was survived by his wife Susan and daughter Kate.  It appears that "Kate" is the Sarah Catherine born 10/24/50.  Kate Raber married Napoleon B. Sowers of York 12/23/1875, and to this union was born William Raber Sowers who married Annie C. Dirk 8/17/1899.

Raber's widow eventually moved in with the Kate and N.B. Sowers family.  They lived at 15 N. Newberry, and were all relatively active members of York's First UB congregation.

In 1907, Susan Raber and Kate Sowers moved to Ellwood City PA.  Whether or not Napoleon moved with them and the reason for the move are not known.  Kate Raber Sowers joined the Methodist Episcopal church there, but Rev. Raber's widow maintained her membership at First UB in York.  Susan Hoff Raber (1/31/1835-10/5/1910) died at her (step)daughter's home in Ellwood City and was returned to York to be buried beside her husband in the Prospect Hill cemetery.  Efforts to further trace the family of Kate and Napoleon Sowers in York or Ellwood City have not been fruitful.
