Fall 2005
Teaching Effectiveness Workshop
on Tuesday, August 23, 2005, featured Dr.
Maryellen Weimer, editor of the Teaching Professor, author, and
Professor of Teaching and Learning at Penn State Berks Lehigh
Valley College. The workshop, "Teaching that Promotes
Learning",was held in the new Honors Hall, and started
at 11:15 AM, just after the All College Gathering ended. We
met for lunch in the Schultz room of Wertz Student Center from
roughly 12:15 to 1:15 PM, followed by an afternoon session back
in the Honors Hall. We were done by 5 PM. The workshop was held
before classes start in the hope that more people could attend
for the entire workshop.
The second
Teaching Effectiveness event of the semester was a luncheon
held on Thursday September 22, 2005 in the Jane Schultz room of
Wertz Hall. The luncheon started at 11:30 AM in the Schultz
Room in Wertz. Shortly after noon, there was a discussion of
two articles: "The Effectiveness of Assignments That Utilize a
Time-Efficient Grading Scheme" and "Helicopter Parents".
The third
Teaching Effectiveness event of the semester was a luncheon held
on Thursday October 27, 2005. The luncheon started at 11:30 AM
in the Jane Schultz room of Wertz Hall. Shortly after noon,
there was a presentation by Steve Koehn and Janet Hurlbert, as a
preview of their talk at the Lilly Conference at Miami
University (of Ohio) the following November. Their presentation
was followed by a question and answer session. A summary:
Intervention is a viable option in assisting students with the
development of research skills. They will report on a model for
research skill training utilizing core courses, a colloquium
experience, and an annotated bibliography project in a senior
level research method course, all in Communications.
The fourth
Teaching Effectiveness event of the semester was a luncheon
held on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005 in the Jane Shultz Room. Lunch
started at 11:30 AM and the program started about 11:45
AM.
The program title was "Writing Intensive Courses: Students Share
Their Views". Jane Keller and a panel of students from various
disciplines shared their impressions of writing intensive
courses at a Teaching Effectiveness luncheon. This was an open
forum in which faculty could ask wide-ranging questions about
student reactions to writing intensive courses and the WAC
program.
Attendance carried one hour of workshop credit toward
certification for teaching W courses.
The fifth and last Teaching
Effectiveness event of the semester was a luncheon held on
Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005 in the Jane Shultz Room. Lunch started at 11:30 AM and the program started about noon.
The program title was "Colloquia and Seminars at Lycoming
College". All department chairs and program
directors were surveyed about their use of colloquia and seminars. A summary
of the results of the survey was provided and members of
many of the departments offering colloquia and seminars were on hand to answer questions and discuss what they do.

Lunches will start about 11:30
AM and the discussion will start a little after noon. We should be
done by 12:50 PM at the latest and, as always, it is OK to come
late or leave early.
Thursday, February 17, 2005, 11:30 AM to
12:50 PM lunch in the Schultz Room
Luncheon to promote both the Pennsylvania Summer Academy and the
Lilly Conference,
There will be brief presentations on the Pennsylvania Summer
Academy (by Sue Beery and J. Stanley) and Lilly Conference (by
Janet Hurlbert and Susan Ross). Our panelists will also answer
your questions . Lycoming College typically sends up to two
persons each year to the PA Summer Academy. There is also a
Lycoming tradition of attending as well as presenting at the
Lilly Conference.
Tuesday, March 22, 2005, 11:30 AM to 12:50 PM lunch in the
Schultz Room
Writing Across the Curriculum workshop.
"W course Challenges: Sharing our Approaches" is the focus of
the Teaching Effectiveness luncheon on Tuesday, March 22, 2005.
This will be a writing intensive workshop, and an hour of
workshop credit will be given to attendees.
The luncheon will start at 11:30 AM in the Schultz Room in
Wertz. About 11:45, all are invited to join in roundtable
discussions of W course challenges, including the following
issues: how to balance teaching course content with writing, how
to give meaningful feedback in large classes, how to make peer
review time effective, how to motivate students to write well.
We will discuss these and other pertinent issues in small groups
then share our best ideas with all. Please join us.
Tuesday, March 29, 2005, 11:30 AM to 12:50 PM lunch in the
Schultz Room
Talks on teaching from last year's Teaching Award recipients,
Phil Sprunger and Chris Woodruff.
Monday, April 11, 2005, 7:00 to 8:30 PM. Our final
Teaching Effectiveness event of the semester will be an Evening
at the Dean's House. Dean John Piper and his wife Margaret have
graciously opened their home for an evening of discussion and
desserts. Our theme for the evening will be "What Makes a
Well-Designed Course?". We should be done by 8:30 PM at the
latest. As usual, it is OK to arrive late or leave early, if
need be.
Fall 2004
All events are lunches in the fall. Lunch will start about 11:30
AM and the discussion will start a little after noon. We should be
done by 12:50 PM at the latest and, as always, it is OK to come
late or leave early.
Thursday, September 23, 2004, 11:30 AM to
12:50 PM lunch in the Schultz Room
Our topics for discussion will be two recent articles from "The
Teaching Professor". We ask everyone attending to read these articles
(both one page long). "Understanding
How Students Perceive Workload" and "Confronting
Failure Constructively". For copyright reasons, you must use your
login ID and password to access them.
"The Teaching Professor" is part of the Snowden Library's Teaching
Effectiveness shelf (on the entrance floor by the stairs) and there are
many other wonderful resources available there.
Thursday, September 30, 2004, 11:30 AM to
12:50 PM lunch in the Schultz Room
Our panel will consist of six students (Kelly Howerter, Emily
Lubold, Nick Nastasi, Brad Webb, Josh Williard, Melissa Wright)
from the senior, junior and sophomore classes and with a variety
of majors. Each will speak briefly on some aspect of their "ideal
professor" or "ideal teaching style". We will then open the
session up for moderated questions and discussion.

Thursday, October 14, 2004, 11:30 AM to
12:50 PM lunch in the Jonas Room
Our program is "W Profs Answer Your Questions".
Bring your questions, concerns, joys, and frustrations to lunch
with a group of experienced professors who have taught writing
intensive courses in diverse disciplines. Our panel will include
Howard Berthold, Eileen Peluso, Charles Mahler, and
Owen Herring. They can share information about setting up a W
course, what techniques work and what techniques do not, and what
they have learned to do and not to do based on their own
experiences. An hour of W workshop credit will be given to those
attending.
Thursday, November 4, 2004, 11:30 AM to
12:50 PM lunch in the Schultz Room
Dan Hartsock and a panel of six students with various
disabilities will discuss disability services on campus. Dan will
introduce his new Disability Handbook, talk about the faculty role
in disability support, and share a few numbers about disability
services. Students will discuss their experiences with
disabilities in and out of the classroom.
Tuesday, November 16, 2004, 11:30 AM to
12:50 PM lunch in the Schultz Room
Our program is on the use of film and video
in teaching, both in and outside scheduled class periods, and
using both clips or selections and entire films. There will be
brief presentations by a panel of faculty including Cullen
Chandler, Amy Cartal-Falk, Charlie Guttendorf, and Susan Ross,
followed by a question and answer session.
