Senior Director, Strategic Research Initiatives

 As a Senior Director within Merck’s External Scientific Affairs department, Dr. Newbold is responsible for leading a team of scientists in the evaluation and negotiation of relationships in broad areas of platform technologies, covering the disciplines of chemistry and biology, automation and instrumentation investment, and the area of molecular profiling which includes both genomics and proteomics technologies.  He and his group have executed over 65 agreements in the past 5 years, helping to advance Merck’s drug discovery capabilities with external partnerships in the academic and biotechnology communities. 

 Prior to Merck, Dr. Newbold held a postdoctoral fellowship with Nobel Laureate E.J. Corey at Harvard University, following doctoral studies in synthetic organic chemistry at the University of Rochester.   He received his undergraduate training in chemistry at Union College.
