Gamma Sigma Alpha National Greek Academic Honor Society
Members of Lycoming College Chapter of Gamma Sigma Alpha National Greek Academic Honor Society
Gamma Sigma Alpha, National Greek Academic Honor Society, was founded to promote intellectual interaction between Greek students and the academic community. The purpose of the Society is to promote the advancement of education among Greeks, to instill a greater spirit of cooperation among Greek students and organizations, and to encourage excellence in scholarship.
In 1989, a group of scholastic achievers at the University of Southern California, representing various Greek fraternities and sororities joined together to create an organization dedicated to the advancement of higher education and academic accomplishment. The Alpha chapter of Gamma Sigma Alpha was founded on November 9, 1989, as a result of these students' efforts. The national board was established the following year to promote the Society's ideals on campuses across the country.
Gamma Sigma Alpha is committed to the leadership, academic achievement, and excellence of Greek members everywhere.
Students are eligible for membership based on their grade point average and active membership in a Greek fraternity or sorority recognized by their university. The society strives to uphold the high ideals of scholastic achievement, and therefore, only students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above (on a 4.0 scale) at the start of their junior year (60 or more credits) are eligible to join.
Leadership - Gamma Sigma Alpha, developed and coordinated solely by students, offers members the opportunity to cultivate their leadership skills through officer positions, chapter programming, and the national executive board. This newly established Society offers the chance for a few highly motivated, and creative thinkers to assist with expansion plans, as well.
Lifetime Membership - Members pay a one-time membership fee that entitles them to a lifetime of experiences and academic enrichment through Gamma Sigma Alpha.
Networking - Members are given an unique opportunity to meet with other outstanding Greek students, as well as university faculty and administration, an integral part of the Society's goal and activities. The bonds of scholarship develop into the bonds of friendship and mutual respect between members as they participate in Gamma Sigma Alpha programming.
Scholastic Achievement - By accepting membership into Gamma Sigma Alpha, students are recognized for their outstanding scholastic achievement. By participating in the Society's activities and programming, students enrich their understanding and commitment to academics. Gamma Sigma Alpha enables members to further their own achievements in academia, as well as to promote scholarship in the university community.
