2005 Women's Tennis

Warriors Fall Just Short of First Victory

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. – Lycoming women’s tennis put out its best effort of the season on Wednesday against King’s College, but came up only a few points shy of recording its first team victory of the season in dropping the match to the Monarch’s 6-3 in Wilkes-Barre.

Lycoming picked up a pair of singles victories and a doubles triumph in its much improved performance.

Senior Josie Castillo (Maracaibo, Venezuela/Muncy) increased her match winning streak to five with a 6-0, 6-1 blitzing of Kristen Hunt at number one singles.  Her season individual record now sits at 5-1.  In her last two matches, Castillo has only surrendered three total games in four sets of play.

Fellow senior Kate Petcavage (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) won her first singles match of the year from the third position.  She bested Malena Kinsman in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 in what was characterized as “an excellent match to watch” by head coach Deb Holmes.

At number two doubles, the pair of Lauren Paich (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Reg.) and Amery Lim (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) earned a break late in the match and trounced Kristen Sebastian and Sarah Guza 8-6.

Only two tie-breaker points kept Lycoming from winning at number one doubles.  Castillo and Petcavage, down 2-7 early in the match, stormed back to tie Hunter and Rita Kaluzavich 8-8 to send the contest into extra points.  Hunter and Kaluzavich won the ensuing tie-breaker 9-7 and claimed the match 9-8.

With good efforts under their belts, the Warriors travel to Juniata College on Saturday, September 24, for their next match.  First serve is set for 11:00 a.m.
