LYCOMING COLLEGE WOMEN’S TENNIS PREVIEW
WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The
Lycoming College women’s tennis team will have a new look in 2003
following the graduation of Cricket Temple and Meredith
Moerschbacher – the Warriors’ top two players over the past four
seasons. Temple and Moerschbacher combined for 84 individual victories
during their careers and led the team to an overall record of 34-8. The
cupboard is not bare, however, as Lycoming returns six student-athletes
from last season’s 7-3 squad, including three starters.
Senior
Heidi von Schwedler (Tannersville, Pa.; Pocono Mountain) and
sophomore Josemar Castillo (Maracaibo, Venezuela; Muncy) will be
expected to fill the void at the top of the Warriors’ line-up and lead
the team in 2003. Von Schwedler recorded a mark of 7-2 at fourth singles a
year ago and has a career singles record of 22-7. Castillo played at third
singles during her freshman season and compiled a record of 7-3. The duo
also paired up to compete at second doubles for Lycoming last season,
going 9-3 overall.
Junior
Lauren Pilgermayer (Kunkletown, Pa.; Pleasant Valley) also returns
after starting at fifth singles in 2002. Pilgermayer was 2-5 in seven
matches, but in her third season on the team should provide some quality
depth to the line-up.
Also
returning from last year’s team are senior Erin Mastrantonio (Elmira,
N.Y.; Elmira Freedom Academy) and juniors Lisa Pease (Chester, Md.;
Central Dauphin East (Pa.)) and Michelle Roux (Collegeville, Pa.;
Methacton). All three saw limited action last season and will compete
to make the starting line-up in 2003.
Six
newcomers to the team will also compete to earn a spot in the starting
line-up. Junior Erin Horsley (Allegany, N.Y.; Allegany) and
sophomore Kate Petcavage (Williamsport, Pa.; Williamsport) join the
team for the first time as upperclassmen. Freshmen Anna Hefner
(Williamsport, Pa.; Williamsport), Amery Lim (Stroudsburg, Pa.;
Livorno American), Lauren Paich (Stanhope, N.J.; Lenape Valley
Reg.), and Corinne Dochney (Phillipsburg, N.J.; Phillipsburg)
hope to make the adjustment to the collegiate level and contribute early
in their careers.
The
Warriors open their season at home on Monday, September 1, versus Messiah
College. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. at the tennis courts in Bruce
Henry Park.
