LYCOMING WOMEN’S
TENNIS DEFEATS MESSIAH IN SEASON OPENER
GRANTHAM, PA – The
Lycoming College women’s tennis team started their season off on the
right foot with a 6-3 victory over Messiah College, Monday afternoon. The
Warriors won 4-of-6 singles matches and 2-of-3 doubles matches to secure
the 6-3 team victory.
Cricket Temple
(Sr./Picture Rocks, PA; Hughesville)
and Meredith Moerschbacher (Sr./Montoursville, PA; Montoursville)
got things started for Lycoming with an 8-4 victory at first doubles. Heidi
von Schwedler (Jr./Tannersville, PA; Pocono Mountain) and Josemar
Castillo (Fr./Maracaibo, Venezuela; Muncy) followed with an 8-6 win in
the second position to give the Warriors a 2-1 advantage entering singles
action.
The same four players
took care of business for Lycoming, each winning their singles match to
claim the team victory. Temple went 6-0, 6-2 to defeat Kate Geesey in the
first position. Moerschbacher topped Lindsay Jones at number two singles,
6-4, 6-1. At third singles, Castillo bettered Heather Bush, 6-3, 7-5. And
von Schwedler won at fourth singles, 6-3, 6-2, over Megan Barnickel.
Lycoming will open their
home schedule on Saturday, September 7, when they host the University of
Scranton. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.
