WARRIOR WOMEN’S TENNIS
DEFEATS MESSIAH IN THRILLER
WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The
Lycoming College women’s tennis team opened the 2001 season by hosting
Messiah College, Monday afternoon. The Warriors were taken to the brink
but Dara Berninger (Jr./Muncy, PA; Muncy) won the final singles
match in a third-set tiebreaker to give Lycoming a 5-4 team victory. The
win marks the Warriors’ 16th consecutive regular season
victory.
Lycoming opened the match
well, by winning two-of-three doubles matches. Cricket Temple
(Jr./Hughesville, PA; Hughesville) and Meredith Moerschbacher
(Jr./Montoursville, PA; Montoursville) came back from a four-game
deficit to win first doubles, 8-6. Alissa Brown (Fr./Hughesville, PA;
Hughesville) and Pamela Zeger (Fr./Potomac, MD; Winston Churchill)
added the other victory at third doubles by a score of 8-3.
In singles action,
Moerschbacher was victorious in the second position, defeating Deanna Ng
in two sets, 6-4, 6-1. Zeger picked up her second win of the afternoon at
sixth singles, winning 6-3, 6-0, over Carey Woglemuth. Berninger picked up
the match-winner, topping Megan Barnickle, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3).
The Warriors return to
action on Saturday, September 8 when they travel to the University of
Scranton for their first Freedom Conference match of the season.
