LYCOMING TENNIS PLAYERS BOW OUT OF MAC TOURNAMENT AFTER FIRST DAY

ANNVILLE, PA –  The Lycoming College tennis team sent four individuals to compete in the Middle Atlantic Conference individual singles and doubles tournaments held at Lebanon Valley College this weekend. Cricket Temple (Jr./Hughesville, PA; Hughesville) and Meredith Moerschbacher competed in the singles tournament while Heidi von Schwedler (So./Tannersville, PA; Pocono Mountain) and Pamela Zeger (Fr./Potomac, MD; Winston Churchill) teamed up to compete in doubles action.

Things started out well for the Warriors as all of Lycoming’s athletes won their first and second round matches to advance to the quarterfinals. Temple received a first round bye as the tournament’s second seed. She then defeated Amora Cook of Lebanon Valley College, 6-1, 6-2.

Moerschbacher opened up play with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alison Kennan of FDU-Madison. She followed with a second-round victory over Liz Marvil of Widener by the same score.

Zeger and von Schwedler defeated a doubles team from Elizabethtown, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round of the doubles competition. They then topped a team from Drew in the second round, 6-2, 6-4.

Lycoming’s luck came to an end as the quarterfinals got under way. Temple was upset in three sets by Deanna Ng of Messiah College, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Moerschbacher fell to the tournament’s fourth seed, Erin Michalisin of Scranton, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. And Zeger and von Schwedler came up short versus the fourth seeded doubles team from FDU-Madison, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.

As a team Lycoming finished the 2001 season with a record of 9-2 and a second place finish in the MAC Freedom Conference.
