Women’s Soccer Holds Annual Banquet
Awards Announced along with 2007 Captains

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—Lycoming’s women’s soccer team celebrated the 2006 season with its annual awards banquet this weekend. It was an opportunity to recognize individual achievements and an occasion for parents to meet the new head coach Joe Balduino.

Awards were presented to several members of the 2006 squad. Senior Amanda Smolarek (Cranbury, NJ) was named team MVP. Her efforts on the season included three goals and two assists, while emotionally leading the Lady Warriors. She was previously named Lycoming’s Rookie of the Year in her freshman season of 2003.

This year’s Rookie of the Year honors went to freshman Samantha Jo Bell (Maple Shade, NJ).  Bell played in every game this season for the Lady Warriors, starting six contests. She scored her lone goal of the season against Drew on October 14th.

Senior Patricia Spencer (Glenside, PA) received honors as Lycoming’s Most Improved Player. A defender for the Lady Warriors, Spencer appeared in eight games, five of which were starts.  Fellow senior Katlyn Kastenhuber (Hatboro, PA) was named the team’s Woman of the Year.  Kastenhuber appeared in three games for the Warriors and completed her fourth year with the team.

Lycoming also had several players named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Academic Honor Roll in 2006. In addition to Spencer and Smolarek, senior Heather Weller (Mifflinburg, PA), juniors Gabrielle Toy (Whitehall, PA) and Jessica Bennett (Crofton, MD) and sophomores Stephanie Shearer (Reading, PA) and Rebekah Shipe (Northumberland, PA) were all recognized for their efforts in the classroom.

Looking to the future, the team announced its captains for 2007. The duties will be shared by the aforementioned Gabrielle Toy, as well as Rebekah Shipe. Toy, who will be a senior, appeared in nearly all of Lycoming’s games last season. Shipe, who will be a junior, played in and started every game, registering two goals and four assists for eight points.

In addition the awards, the highlight of the banquet may have been when the parents presented the team with a photo montage celebrating the 2006 season. The banquet was a fitting send-off to graduating seniors Smolarek, Spencer, Kastenhuber and Weller, as well as Stephanie Bomgardner (Dauphin, PA) and Angie Conklin (Shermansdale, PA). Bomgardner served as a captain for the Lady Warriors this season, as well as having been a part of the varsity team for four years. Conklin received Rookie of the Year honors her freshman season.

Overall, the event was a great success with a fine turnout and tremendous support. It served as a final farewell to dedicated seniors, as well as a preview of the promising future of the program.
